City attorney Richard Wilson of Mika, Meyers Beckett & Jones announced he had researched a question Tom Rotta had posed at council’s first meeting of 2014 when Cox, who is also a member of the volunteer police auxiliary of Ludington Police Department, began serving as mayor.
At issue was whether Cox could remain a volunteer police officer while serving simultaneously as mayor. The answer, Wilson said, is yes. He said his research concludes “that these two positions are not incompatible and that you (Cox) are not required to relinquish one in order to retain the other.”
Then he offered Rotta a copy of the four-page opinion sent by him to Cox. Wilson said he’d give Rotta the letter to save him the cost of filing a Freedom of Information Act request for it.
