RACINE — More than a day since a 10-year-old boy was last seen in Lake Michigan, he is still missing.

Willie Bogan was swimming with two other boys about his age Saturday just south of North Beach when waves swept them out into the lake. Two were pulled from the water safely at about 3 p.m. Saturday but, as of Sunday evening, Willie was still missing.

Willie was supposed to be going into fifth grade at Roosevelt Elementary School, 915 Romayne Ave.

He was going to be 11 in October, said his sister, Nicole Cannon, 30, of Racine, who works in the emergency room at Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints hospital, 3801 Spring St.

He liked playing video games and trading Pokemon cards with her son, Cannon said about her younger brother, who was the youngest of eight children.

His mother, Doris Strickland, of Racine, works at a senior home; and his father, Robert, has passed away, Cannon said.

“They loved going to the park to play basketball and going to the fountain,” Cannon said.

On Saturday, Willie and a brother, 12, and nephew, 11, told Cannon’s husband, Demetrius, that they were going to go to the Dr. Laurel Blair Salton Clark Memorial Fountain near the library. But they ended up going to the beach and into the lake.

They were swimming in the water there, not jumping off the pier, law enforcement officials said.

The Racine County Water Rescue Response Team had planned to continue its underwater search Sunday, but water conditions weren’t good enough, said Lt. Bob Zortman of the Racine County Sheriff’s Department.

Standing near the beginning of the pier just south of North Beach, Zortman told the boy’s family Sunday that the search would continue today.

They had boats searching the surface Sunday, he said. But it was not safe to have divers in the water, he said. “As much as I want to get out there, we cannot,” Zortman told the family. “It’s just too dangerous.”

There are caverns by the rocks and they have not yet been able to safely search there, Zortman said.

At this point, the search is in recovery mode instead of rescue mode, but the search will continue.

“We are trying to find him,” Zortman said.

Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling said the county is committed to finding Willie.

“I will make all necessary resources available,” Schmaling said. He also said he will meet with the Water Rescue Team and Racine Mayor John Dickert to discuss what, if any, changes should occur to prevent any similar tragedy from happening.

Cannon said her family is grateful for the prayers and support her family has received and the help everyone is providing in the search for her brother.

Cannon said: “He is going to be dearly missed.”
