Mason County Police Surprise Drivers By Handing Out Hams Instead Of Tickets

Armed with radar guns and hams, police in Mason County made holiday cheer Tuesday's mission.

Instead of tickets, they are handing out hams for Christmas.

Century 21 Realty donated 30 hams to law enforcement across Mason County.

It didn't matter if it was a state trooper or Ludington police officer, traffic stops involved ham.

It comes at a great time for one driver, who won't be able to see her family this Christmas.

“I was pulled over today for going too fast, I didn't get a ticket but I received a ham. And that was a great surprise for me. It's been a rough week and that was a nice uplifter for me,” says Kelly Larson.

Kelly says she's having surgery over Christmas break, and that this small gesture will make recovery a little easier.

The local police giving out hams.  Hmmm.  There's a joke there somewhere, but I want to be with my family this Christmas. 

Hey wait a minute, LPD Chief Mark Barnett was absent from last night's city council meeting.

Yes' He was up all night praying for hams!

Well, that's good news!  With 30 hams being given out at 10-15 lbs. each, I was worried whether LPD Captain Harrie pulled a coup d'état and was trying to destroy the evidence.

Did they pull people over at random or did they stop people who had violated a traffic law? It's a good thing the police did not encounter a violent criminal. If they had stopped a bank robber would they have given him a ham and let him go on his way?

I can just see what might have occurred if they stopped a devout Seventh-Day Adventist (or any other practitioner of a religion that cannot eat ham) or a vegetarian:

Cop:  Do you know why I stopped you?

Driver:  I may have been going too fast? 

Cop:  Yeah, and you may have missed seeing that stop sign back there.  But we aren't giving out tickets today, we're giving out these (presents ham hock).

Driver:  Aah, get it away, please.

Cop:  What's your problem?  You're getting no ticket, just this ham for your Christmas dinner (puts ham in window).

Driver:  Get it away from me (knocks ham out of cop's hand onto the ground).

Cop:  (On radio)  Assistance needed on Dowland and George Streets, we have someone resisting, obstructing and assaulting an officer.  Get out of the car sir.

Driver:  You don't understand officer, I can't...

Cop:  ...Can't get out of the car?  Here let me help you.
