Once again, our county sheriff's office feels the need to control the natural flow of information, leaving the county ignorant of this poor woman's death.  Aleatha Cox, was removed from her burning house at 4602 S PM Highway early this morning.  Her husband suffered some injuries in getting free.  Both are rather elderly, neither have had their name revealed to the area's media as of this printing.

The COLDNews article was updated at 5:38 PM more than 15 hours after this fire, the radio stations have not identified the lady, they are much like the Mason County Press:

Woman dies in Summit Twp. house fire.

"SUMMIT TOWNSHIP — A house fire at 4602 S. Pere Marquette Highway claimed the life of a woman early Wednesday morning, Oct. 11, 2017. The victim’s husband, who called 911 to report the fire, was transported to the hospital by ambulance for injuries sustained during the fire.

Riverton Township Fire Department and Pere Marquette Township Fire Department were called to the scene at 2:02 a.m. Initial dispatch information stated that one female was still inside the house. Michigan State Police Trooper Matt Demny and Mason County sheriff deputies Matt Warmeskerken and Dan Dice were the first to arrive on scene and attempted to make entry, heavy smoke and heat prevented them from entering the house. Firefighters, equipped with air packs, were able to enter the home and remove the female shortly after they got on scene. Riverton Township Fire Chief Joe Cooper said the fire was contained quickly.

Life EMS ambulance transported the male to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital.

Detectives from Mason County Sheriff’s Office were called to investigate the death. Cooper said initial analysis of the fire indicates that it started in the back of the house, which is also where the female was located. Cooper said he was calling a Michigan State Police fire marshal to investigate the cause of the fire.

Responding to the fire were Riverton Township Fire Department, Pere Marquette Township Fire Department, Ludington Fire Department, Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, and Life EMS."  [End of Article]

Unfortunately, whether this is a suspicious fire or not, the sheriff's office is reckless in not telling the public about why this woman's name is being withheld well more than half of a day later.  Why would they do that?  Why would our local media be complicit in suppressing this information so that people who may be friends or distant relatives of Aleatha or her husband cannot learn of this tragic death and pay their proper respects to her surviving family in a timely manner, rather than worry that if they say her name that they will be chastised by the county sheriff for the premature release of her name?

This is the state of our media here in Mason County.

Definitely, and this time of year it serves as a reminder to all to be sure your heater, furnace or fireplace is working correctly and efficiently-- even if the cause of the fire turns out to be something else in this case.  Prayers for peace to all surviving family members.

The COLDNews finally updated the story about 1 hour ago, the MCP about 15 minutes ago.  It's too bad they are seemingly controlled by the county sheriff in doing their jobs of informing the public of what's going on.
