Sheriff Cole, His Lesbian Lawyer, and Nutty Nuptials

In January, the article  I sought the Sheriff, But I Did Not Sue No Deputy, detailed the lawsuit I had filed concerning three blocked FOIA requests (currently five with the amended complaint) made by me to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.  These denials were incredible, I was denied all records concerning a motorcycle accident over two weeks after the fact, even though the sheriff's office is required to make out a report with non-exempt data (a UD-10) by the MSP.  As we approach one year after that accident, they still claim the whole report is exempt, at least that's what their attorney, Shaina R. Reed, claimed in her answer and affirmative answers to our lawsuit, asking for an in-camera review of the records by the judge.

Shaina R. Reed was a member of the Johnson Rosati Schultz & Joppich LLC law firm.  I must use the past tense verb 'was', because today I received a letter from the law firm informing me that she wasn't working for them any more, in a letter dated April 18, but sent April 28.

I met Shaina Reed at a 'pre-trial hearing' back in February to talk of the in camera motion she made; she seemed nice and capable enough.  Due to my beliefs about the records requested, I thought the review would be bad for her client, but 51st Circuit Court Judge Susan Sniegowski agreed to look at the records.  The opinion eventually received about that review, however, surprised me, and seemed to contradict Judge Wadel's rulings made just a few days before the only hearing held yet in the sheriff's case.  The case is currently at a crossroads.

What happened with Shaina Reed?  One thing I learned back in February when she came forth in the case when I was researching her professional life and past cases, was that her personal life was not what one would equate to be 'proper' for a Sheriff like Kim Cole, who promotes a strong Christian values platform in his policies, such as advocating and orating at National Day of Prayer, putting "One Nation Under God" on his patrol cars, and using his power to thwart abortions.  Such unapologetic positions strengthen his standing in this area which has more traditional values than the rest of Michigan.  Few can fault him for holding such beliefs.

Shaina herself, however, does not live a traditional life style.  No attorney does, you may say, but it's more than that.  She has an affinity for members of her own sex, which she apparently is mostly open about considering she opened her own entry on The Knot showing that she is going to marry Laura Zanders.  A frolicking picture of the couple from that website is shown below.

Let us hope that Shaina voluntarily left the thankless job of defending indefensible actions of sheriff's departments to pursue her happiness in her own way and wish her a happy Wedding Day, which happens to be today.  Like it or not, Gay Marriage in Michigan is legal since June 26, 2015, which ironically is about the time most of my FOIA requests were made and ignored.

Let us also hope that Sheriff Kim Cole or Johnson Rosati did not decide to fire Ms. Reed (or is that Mrs. Zander) strictly because of her orientation or her advocacy of things such staunch agencies might find repellent.  She's a competent enough attorney, she can address those things herself if that is the case.

To Shaina, my former opposing counsel, I offer this prayer to her:  May the love that brought you and Laura together grow and mature with each passing year. May you both become closer to God through your love for each other.  May this love grow to perfection.  Enjoy your honeymoon and marriage.

It seems that Sheriff Cole is an equal opportunity hypocrite.

And I beg to differ with your title heading X, but I see this marriage as being more along the lines of a nutless nuptial.

That's hilarious; you make a better proofreader than Patti.

Clint no like these people either.

She can be as happy as she wants without perverting marriage. This is a twisted application of an age old ceremony which flies in the face of common sense. Turning marriage into deviancy  is not a good thing for society. It appears more people are excepting convoluted ideals so now it will be OK to marry their mother's, dogs trainers, grandmother's, sisters cousins python named Homer and is now considered normal even if the python is a divorcee who was just discharged from a court ordered work release program at a graham cracker factory. No amount of twisting reality will make same sex marriage normal.
