Shiv Killing Illustrates Manistee's Depth of Official Secrecy

Why are all the public officials in Manistee reluctant to give out any of the details of the stabbing death of Bruce Schaub this last Tuesday, August 8th?  They do note that his wife has been arraigned on open murder charges and is in jail without bond, however, there is no indication of why they believe she did it, no release of any of the records concerning the crime, and no official willing to disseminate anything more, as shown in a Friday press conference that revealed nothing new.  Here was the original incident as accounted for in the City of Manistee Advocate 8-9-17 (COMA):

MANISTEE — A Manistee woman is facing a life in prison for the death of Bruce Schaub, of Manistee.

Jeneva Anne Schaub, 46, was arraigned in Manistee’s 85th District Court on Wednesday afternoon on felony charges for homicide/open murder. The felony holds a maximum life sentence, if convicted of open murder.

Bruce Schaub, 51, was pronounced dead on Tuesday morning after suffering stab wounds.

The Manistee City Police Department and Manistee City Fire Medic 5 were dispatched to the 300 block of Fourth Street in Manistee around 5:18 a.m. on Tuesday. Life-saving efforts were made, however Schaub was later pronounced dead at Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital.

Detective Josh Glass, of the Manistee City Police Department, is the lead investigator for the case. Glass was assisted by detectives from the Michigan State Police and Manistee County Sheriff’s Office.

The Michigan State Police Crime Lab and Computer Crimes Unit processed the scene for the city police.

“This incident is a very well managed and investigated case, by a team of investigators working together in a cooperative effort. The Manistee City Police Department would like to extend their condolences to all of the family members involved in this tragic incident,” said a press release from the city police, on Wednesday.

Two days later they called their conference to tell the press they still weren't able to talk about what happened:  City of Manistee Advocate 8-11-17, (COMA)

MANISTEE — It has been several days since the murder of Bruce Schaub, of Manistee, however many community members still have questions about what happened on that day.

Following the murder of Bruce, who was stabbed to death at 5:18 a.m. on Tuesday, the Manistee City Police Department held a press conference on Friday morning to address the current status of the homicide investigation.

Tim Kozal, city police public safety director, said the case is still active and the scene is still secure on 300 Block of Fourth St. for the investigation.

Detective Josh Glass, of the Manistee City Police Department, is the lead investigator for the case. Glass was assisted by detectives from the Michigan State Police and Manistee County Sheriff’s Office.

“We were out there just yesterday investigating,” Kozal said. “The investigation into this is very complex, we continue to conduct interviews and follow up on several leads.”

Bruce was found with life-threatening stab wounds on Tuesday morning, when life-saving methods began. He was transported to Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

An autopsy was conducted, however no details have been released.

“We are waiting for the labs to come back,” Kozal said. “It could take awhile.”

After issuing a felony warrant, the city police arrested Jeneva Anne Schaub, 46, of Manistee, for the murder of her husband, Bruce.

Schaub was arraigned in Manistee’s 85th District Court on Wednesday afternoon on felony charges for homicide/open murder. The felony holds a maximum life sentence, if convicted of open murder.

Currently, Schaub is held in the Manistee County Jail without bond. A probable cause conference will be held at 3 p.m. on Aug. 23.

She will be represented by her own attorney.

The couple had children, but whether or not they were present during the incident has not been confirmed by police.

“Right now, Child Protective Services is involved in the investigation because there is children involved,” Kozal said.

Police say the 911 call on Tuesday came from a source inside of the house where Bruce was killed. No motive for the stabbing has been determined.

“Manistee City Police Department would like to extend our condolences to the both families,” Kozal said.

So there is nothing given to the Manistee public about this killing other than the victim's name [Bruce Schaub, pictured left], the main suspect's name, the legal steps, and that it was a knife stabbing.  The Manistee paper and all other media covering it has been given nothing else, though a Cadillac TV station did question some neighbors.

During the time since this stabbing has took place, two other stabbings have occurred in the United States and the police and court officials have been incredibly open about what their investigations have uncovered, releasing their records and their findings to the media.

The Herald, covering York County South Carolina tells of a murder by knife that took place the day after the Schaub stabbing.  The York County Sheriff incident report and all court warrant records were accessible and available to the local media by Friday, the same day the Manistee police were telling us nothing new.  This article says:

"A housemate charged with murder used a shotgun and a knife in the death of a 44-year-old York County man Wednesday, arrest warrants show.

Robert Cleveland Cribb Jr., 22, of 2383 Justin Drive, killed Jerry Proctor with the shotgun, according to arrest warrants released Friday to The Herald.

Cribb was charged by York County Sheriff’s Office deputies with using a knife and the shotgun during the commission of a violent crime, warrants show...

Police have not released information on the relationship between Cribb and Proctor. But the incident report from the killing shows police were called to a disorderly conduct and found Proctor dead inside the mobile home. Cribb was inside the home when police arrived and was taken into custody without incident.

Both men are listed as living at the mobile home northwest of York and west of Clover, the police report shows."

Another grisly murder that happened this weekend in Hampstead, New York has already had all of its gory details released to the media by the investigating authorities, as reported in Today's edition of Newsday:

"A homeless man charged in the killings of his mother, sister and a third woman in Hempstead [on Saturday] stabbed his mother multiple times and beat the other victims with a hammer, according to court records and prosecutors at his arraignment in Hempstead Sunday...

Police said the three women were found dead from “blunt force trauma” at a home on Perry Street about 2:15 a.m. Saturday. A Nassau County police medic pronounced them dead at the scene.

A fourth woman, identified in court records as Candace Murray, was assaulted before she escaped and flagged down a passer-by who called Hempstead police, authorities said.

Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick, commanding officer of the Homicide Squad, said Bobby Vanderhall was homeless and had become enraged “because his mother had thrown him out of the house.”

When he arrived at the home to find the doors locked, “he went to the garage. He obtained a large hammer . . . With this framing hammer, he broke through the basement door,” Fitzpatrick said.

“The girls were all upstairs and heard what was going on in the living room,” he said. “As they came to the staircase, Bobby was already coming up after them.”

Police said he stayed in the home briefly after the attack and was later found sleeping in a parked vehicle."

After proper notifications of other family members take place, police agencies should be as transparent as possible with the media and the public in situations like this.  York County, SC and Nassau County, NY officials are sophisticated and dedicated enough to the public to allow the open transmission of news details to the media and the people.

Manistee County would rather keep the people that pay their salaries and finance their investigations to remain in the dark as much as possible.  The people should recognize that keeping relevant information from the public is abhorrent in a democracy and lends to the public creating their own stories based on rumor, superstition, and ignorance.

This is exactly what they did when their own officer killed a private citizen, Lee Pat Milks, and they unlawfully withheld all records from the public, leading to a lawsuit seeking that information.  Despite that lawsuit, they continue withholding that information several months later.  Manistee citizens should not tolerate such behavior from those that are there to supposedly serve them and instead waste their money defending their unlawful actions at suppressing knowledge.
