It's hard to believe that in it's 800 plus year history that now, in the age of advance fire and smoke detection, fire suppression equipment and modern fire fighting personal, know how and techniques that  Notre Dame is burning to the ground. This church even survived WW2 and the German occupation. I'm not saying it was arson or terrorists just that it is very suspicious to think that it was some how caused by a worker's accident. The reason I said worker is that any other reason or cause would be arson or terrorism and I hope that's not the case. Many fires have started by careless uses of welding equipment. We shall soon see what caused this fire. Any expert opinion X seeing how the fire started in the upper levels of the church?

The loss of the 12 million tourists per year who visited the church is going to hurt the economy hard. Of course the way people are, a burnt out shell of the great cathedral will in itself be an attraction and photo opp.

I gotta lay the blame where it belongs Willy, with climate change and Trump.

On the other hand 7 of 8 Ludington city councilors will blame X for the disaster so there is that.

Good one shinblind.

One can only speculate on the cause at this point, but it was a structure made mostly of stone, not a lot of electrical devices other than lights and security systems.  I would be suspicious of the workers hired, some of them may not have the same veneration that the French have for the site, some may actively be anti-Catholic and may have intentionally set a fire.  But without investigating it's near impossible to do anything other than guess.

One thing I can't comprehend is that the media reports:  "The cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials say it probably began as an accident during restoration work. The cathedral was in the midst of a $6.8 million renovation project. Arson was ruled out as well as possible terror-related motives, officials said."

How can they say this?  The cause looks to be an 'accident' by restoration employees, yet arson and terrorism has already been ruled out.  The only difference between a fire caused by accident/human error and arson/terrorism is intent, so how are investigators able to figure that out at this stage of the investigation?   The investigation already looks tainted by the illogic of political correctness.

I heard the same thing on another news network. In one of my past lives I used to be involved with fire investigations. I would be called in to rule in or out a specific area that may have caused a fire but only after the fire was completely extinguished and things had cooled down. This investigation process included electrical, mechanical, structural, chemical analysis, the fire Marshal  and other experts. Only then could a conclusion be reached. In the case of Notre Dame, we are already getting reports that could only be done after a thourough investigation has been completed. I think the problem is that the French are so wary of any backlash from the Islamic community that they go way overboard to not upset that community.

A few years ago the wife and I had the opportunity to tour the property. I can see how fire would quickly get out of control as the upper structure was built out of huge wooden beams. I recall thinking how did they get such large beams that high up without the use of modern crane type of equipment. Whatever caused the fire it is truly is loss to the world. Rebuilding can duplicate but it never will be original again. A tragic loss
