Ottawa County Deputy Symptomatic of New Leadership?

It's almost been a year since Ottawa County snagged Ludington's erstwhile City Manager John Shay to fill it's deputy county supervisor role, but it looks like that county's police force may be giving him bad headaches, bad headlines and reminding him of all those unreasonable uses of force lawsuits brought against his old corruptly-administered police department that Shay sometimes commandeered for his own venal uses.

Ottawa County resident Casey Sky (Deerfield) is a hard-working mom trying to make ends meet, but she was involved in a rather strange encounter with the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office  this Sunday.  In a change from her other routine posts you see on her Facebook page, she put up an alarming one on the night of June 9th which is represented below fully with her original wording, be advised that a life-changing event had just happened to her.  Two of the area's TV news agencies eventually picked up her harrowing story.

Casey Sky:  "So I’ve worked 14+ hours on the last two days, and I finally got out early tonight and got to go get food with Jeremy and Stella. So on the way, we see this accident with 3 police cars on 31. We get to the McDonald’s on Riley, in view of the accident, and get out and go inside. I walk to order and Jeremy takes Stella to a booth so he can spy on the accident and see if he can figure out what happened.

I finally get our food and within 5 min of sitting down (didn’t even have time to take one bite) two cops came running in and put me in handcuffs, so tight that 45 min later, I still have marks on my wrists. Apparently they thought I was some chick that ran from this accident. Well anyways, the whole time I’m sitting there talking to this officer, may I add, THE MOST DISRESPECTFUL OFFICER I have ever met in my life. (And I am one of the only people I know that will fight for how our officers are actually here for good) So I’m sitting there in handcuffs,

Jeremy has Stella and this dude is being so mean, saying, “nice story” and smiling and literally saying “we know it was you, just shut up.” I almost started crying. I thought innocent until proven guilty was a thing but that shit blew my mind. I even have an app that allows Siri to record things and I was trying to talk to her and activate it and he moved my phone far away from me so I couldn’t record it and said that wasn’t allowed.

My attitude was on 100%. Luckily Jeremy was there and was keeping me slightly respectful...but still. i asked him 3 times what his name was and he wouldn’t tell me. They ended up getting a call saying they got the chick and let me go, but still, that shit was ridiculous. I blew $20 on dinner that I didn’t get one bite of and I was disrespected beyond belief. I lost faith in our #OttawaCountyPoliceDept
Prime example of police trying to find a quick fix instead of doing their job.
If you know the name of this officer, please message me with his info.
******6.10.19 UPDATE!
I have figured out that his name is Officer Travis Wheaton. I have filed a report. And IA will be investigating. If the county doesn’t take action, I have also spoke with Fox 17 and I will fight this.
*******6.11.19 UPDATE!
I am attempting to call different law firms and trying to obtain a lawyer that can help me for as cheap as possible. I will also be meeting with Fox 17 later today for an interview regarding the misconduct.
********Update 6.11.19
The police obtained the video footage this morning and I asked for a copy of it but they said they couldn’t give me one at this time and will get back to me in it. But they did say that they could completely see why I was so upset and that the video matched my description if what happened, but sadly, it doesn’t capture any audio so we can hear the things he said to me. But we’re getting there. He stated that they have been non-stop working on getting to the bottom of this so the right actions can be take.
UPDATE 6.12.19*******
I talked with the Captain today that deals with Internal Affairs. He was very kind. Corroborated that the video surveillance matches my description of what happened and he said that they didn’t have a right to even initially put me in handcuffs. I will be getting a lawyer. I also interviewed with Fox 17 today about the situation.
UPDATE 6.13.19****
I’ve learned over the past couple days that can’t allow myself to read the comments on this or the Fox 17 post. I feel so attacked. It blows my mind how many people are willing to sit and throw my name through the mud for trying to do the right thing and stand up against wrongful Police. That being said, for those of you defending me, whether you know me or not, from the bottom of my heart, I thank you. I’m struggling a lot with this.. and it means so much to know that I have so many people standing behind me. I should hear back from a lawyer today or tomorrow.

Police protocols are meant to be followed, and Travis Wheaton is a deputy that apparently has a lot to learn at the expense of Ottawa County.  Just earlier this year a federal case was filed against Deputy Wheaton along with the OCSO by Michael Vaneyck for similar violations of his civil rights.  Others have echoed in the hundreds of responses to her post that this is not uncommon for this officer.

But even with this caught on camera, even with dozens of witnessed or verified anecdotes showing a pattern of an abuse of authority throughout his history, deputies like Travis Wheaton will most probably continue serving the county behaviorally-unchecked and be commended for his service even after those payouts and payoffs, at least by those representing the county, including among them, Deputy Supervisor John Shay, who has had so much practice at masking corruption and abuses of power in his latter years at Ludington.

Very sad abuse of power.  I hope Wheaton gets handcuffed figuratively as quickly as she did.

I thought Travis Wheaton looked familiar, it seems as if Travis took the same train to West Olive that John Shay did, because he was on the Ludington Police Department until recently.   We once again need to thank Ottawa County for accepting those Ludington officers/officials that just weren't working out here.
