Manistee City Council to Discuss Replacing City Manager Mitch Deisch

A changing of the guard at the top in Manistee?  With growing discontent among the citizens about the state of Manistee's infrastructure and the various priorities of the city leadership, the city council is scheduled to review whether they want to replace current long term City Manager, Mitch Deisch.  From the agenda of the March 17 meeting we see the following:

That the city council would actually be considering such strong action in midyear, is a good indication they will change the guard and maybe even celebrate with some green beer after taking the shillelagh to Mitch's career.

Mitch's ineffectiveness has been clearly contrasted with the arrival of two new reform minded councilors at the beginning of this year, and a groundswell of non-support for the status quo growing around the City of Manistee.   Barring any smoking guns of unabashed corruption, may Mr. Deisch find an occupation more suitable if he is indeed replaced soon.

I don't know much about Manistee except that it is a very nice city with a vibrant downtown. I know many of the residents up there are a little resentful that Ludington has some major stores and businesses they don't have but they should consider themselves lucky that the freeway stopped at Ludington because the freeway would have cleaned out many the businesses from their wonderful downtown. There's a lot to be said for towns that have been bypassed or lack a freeway's close proximity.

Manistee has voted down City Manager Mitch Deisch by a 5-2 vote, he will effectively be through as acting city manager on April 3, 2015.  They left him with a nice severance package, including a year's salary, buy-outs of his insurances for 12 months, and he got to retain his special city manager car, all told over $100,000 to get rid of him.

This is another reason why city manager systems suck.  If the people recall a mayor who has done a bad job, they don't owe him anything other than a pithy remark on their favorite social media site.

Little detail was offered as to why the five councilors voted against retaining the City Mitchenator, though the mayor and one councilor that voted for him were very sad, the one councilor driven to tears and claiming that the Open Meetings Act had been violated in his opinion, echoing the comments of another public commenter.

These guys were screaming bloody murder without telling how the OMA was violated, citing rumors and their own opinions, it was nothing more than slandering the good councilors without any kind of proof.

I'm keeping my ears open for what made Deisch a liability worth paying off over $100,000 to get rid of without some great replacement in the wings.  It's more than we are being told by the councilors, the five who voted for dismissing Deisch kept closed mouth after the closed session, as if to fuel the rumors and opinions of Manistee Mitch-lovers.

That must have been quite a contract for the Manager to receive such lavish parting gifts. Your right X, this is another good reason why unelected officials such as a Manager's position are completely contrary to the democratic process practiced by the electorate when they vote for a City leader. If nothing else, the voting public of Manistee should be royally peed off about this even if they supported the exiting Manager.

Mitch had his fans among the elite members of Manistee society, much like John Shay has here in Ludington, but to a lesser degree.  Another great reason and reminder to keep the city clerk and treasurer elected rather than appointed.  Here's my video of what happened after closed session in Manistee earlier tonight.  I apologize for the video shooting mostly over the heads of everyone, I couldn't tell at the time that I was aiming high.

The fact that the "Manistee citizens' growing discontent about the city's infrastructure and various other priorities of the city leadership" is the given and leading reason for his dismissal seems to dovetail with Ludington very well imho. Did we in Ludington, just a few scant weeks ago, also not hear about our own infrastructure being totally ignored for many years, over a decade? Did we not also hear that our own leadership in Mr. Shay has other priorities not in line with the locals needs and wants? Geared strictly and repeatedly at tourist related projects? So, what's our excuse in Ludington for failing to do likewise where it comes to Shay? Some smarter Sheeple seem to be waking up and taking notice of their town and reality. But NOT Ludington? If not now, then when? When the entire water and sewer systems come tumbling down around us in total ruins? Note to self, write letter tomorrow: Dear Lord, please lower you next aim by 30 miles south to remove our esteemed City Mgr., aka puppet master and dictator, from his cruel and reckless lack of leadership skills, and his arrogance towards his fellow town locals. Yours very truly, John Q. Public, City of Ludington.
