Sheriff wants The Boot in every classroom. Classroom safety donation campaign underway

How absolutely silly... is my take on this.  But, people are jumping on the bandwagon for these "Boot" devices.

Instead of looking at the real problems of the cause for people to go on shooting sprees at schools etc..fear is instilled and the need for protection of mentally ill people.

Most all of these mass killings have been executed by people that exhibit signs/symptoms of mental illness!

Rather.... people jump on the bandwagon of purchasing the "Boot," to the tune of several hundred dollars for each door.

Have you seen these devices?  They are very simplistic in nature! And then of course the schools can add all the other protective devices for shields, etc...

This is not the answer to psychotic people desiring to shoot up a school.  The answer is mental health funding.  Not just in Mason County, but across the USA!

Fear mongering at its' finest by Sheriff Cole.  Hell, Kim has not even provided the details of Hansen Road incident that occurred how long ago!  Did Cole find the 1 or 2 men that were supposedly involved in this incident.  Even, the area schools were not informed of this alleged incident.  LMAO!

But, hey just jump on the fear mongering bandwagon Sheriff Cole has provided to the various local news agency, asking for donations for these "Boot's."  JMHO!!!

Beyond the hefty price tag of $170,000 to install these devices on every school door in the county, and beyond the salient reasons dealing with mental health that Jasper stated, there are several other considerations you may want to take into account before you adopt a door or two.

1)  The prank factor:  kids like pulling pranks (as do teachers like Mr. Cox and Mr. Winczewski).  A kid can go to an empty room, shut the door with the boot on it and effectively lock everyone out of a room.  Perhaps the teacher leaves the classroom, just to be booted out by the class prankster.

2)  The trained shooter:  Sheriff Cole admits there is a tool that can bypass the Boot.  Once this becomes common knowledge to the student population and beyond from having to use this tool (see prank factor), there's nothing stopping a shooter from getting the tool and train for it if he decides to shoot in classrooms.

3)  The body count shooter:  A shooter that does more homework for one of these schools with Boots can still do quite a bit of damage by getting on campus at the right time, like during class transition times, lunches, and recesses.  Consider when a shooter hears that bell ring outside, marking a time when students move to their next class.  He starts shooting, kids and teachers scramble to get to their rooms with boots.  What are you going to do as a teacher when you hear kids outside your door screaming to get in?  Lift that boot and jeopardize yourself and those kids already inside?  Or will you and them have to live the rest of your life with hearing them die on the other side of that secure door of yours?

Why don't we just have a couple (or more) teachers trained to use a gun at each campus, and supply them with the equipment they will hopefully never have to use in defending the kids?

After much reading on "school shootings" that have occurred since the early 1800's, this is just a preposterous idea by Sheriff Cole.

"The BOOT" is not going to prevent school shootings.  Most times as with this latest Oregon shooting, the shooter(killer) was a student at the college.

The school shooter is not some random person just strolling the neighborhood.  The school shooter is someone that has a vendetta against a fellow student, teacher, or some other authority figure!

But, everyone locally jumped on the massive hysteria bandwagon Sheriff Cole presented to the local media.

So, just donate money for your "BOOT" people!!!!  That is not the answer for preventing school shootings. The school shooter is amongst you!

$230.00 for the "Boot" for each door??  Did you see it?  It is simplistic in nature! But, you can adopt all kinds of other "safety devices

Think about all the open areas of each school.  The school cafeteria?  The hallways?

Here is an idea...Remove all the windows from the schools, and any future schools proposed are built underground.

Hysteria and paranoia rule these days...without any critical thinking!!

This "BOOT" Company is a Michigan Company!!  "Pure Michigan," to spread mass hysteria to purchase their product!

To be fair to Sheriff Cole, I don't think he's made the case that this would prevent school shootings, the passages in the MCP and COLDNews have him saying that they offer a layer of safety and buys the kids time.  To say it would be a preventative or an effective deterrent would be incorrect, and if one looked at the psyche of these shooters, could be taken as a dare.

The best way to deter these shootings is to determine what really produces the twisted minds that want to do these acts and gear our schools to teach in a manner that counteracts such behavior.  Unfortunately, half the population will disagree with whatever remedy is introduced just because of politics.

Sheriff Cole perhaps you would like to respond to this video?

http://www.campussafetymagazine.com/article/video_be_careful_when_b...

The video discusses the problems associated with these devices violating the fire code and voiding the warranties from the door manufacturer.

Seeing as this device is priced $200 more than similar themed devices will Sheriff Cole provide the data that shows this Michigan made door barricade doesn't violate the fire code standards and does not void the door manufacture warranty?

Of course Kim Cole will not answer, he seems like a nice enough person but he is a piss poor administrator who doesn't think things through.

Good video and point.  The most recent nfpa codes are not available free on-line in the .pdf format, but past video codes show that this is against these codes from NFPA 1 (2003):

The egress side, for those from Scottville, is the classroom side.  Why haven't any of our fire chiefs came forth?

I'm in the process of reviewing the pubic records to see what's behind this latest push of the local police and educators, and it will be difficult because the committee seems to be a multi-agency task force.

I have several concerns about the safety issue brought up by shinblind and found in the NFPA codes.  Overall, implementation of the Boot in my school would have me more concerned for my child's safety at this point.  Yet, I have doubts as to whether the knee-jerk reactions by our police and educators in that task force committee took this aspect of safety into account.

I would advise all parents who have similar reservations to take it up with their school district to see whether they have a clear and reasonable answer to your concerns.

The "Boot Program" needs to get the BOOT! Out the door, and be negated.

These boots won't be worth a hill of beans if doors have windows in them.

This is the way I see to too Willy. Any security devise that can be defeated by a metal coat hanger can not offer much in the way of security. Over priced security at that. Chalk this one up to another poorly though out publicity grab by Sheriff Cole.

This is the result of what happens when you surround yourself with yes-men and have the local newspaper groveling  at your beck and call. Someday someone will point out that Emperor Cole is parading about naked and we will be shocked, shocked I tell you,  when we see the truth.

Here's my next question: will the parents actually look into this new security and speak up one way or the other on this program? For or against? Or be mute? Great obvious observation Willy, windows were in many doors at LHS in the day at least, probably now too. And like someone else said, what if the kid is already in the classroom? Now he's locked in with the rest and pretty impregnated with possible hostages. Security would be greatly compromised in that situation.

Of interest is the popular response to this article of news in the COLDNews and MCP Facebook pages.  Of the couple dozen responders, a couple have asked about the safety issues, and, to their credit, the sheriff and Deputy Oscar Davila responded to them.

The sheriff downplayed any safety issues, saying each deputy of his would carry a tool to bypass the Boot, which means a knowledgeable shooter would have such a tool.  He then states the tool would be useless to someone without training to use them, but what if the shooter happens to be a cop or ex-cop, or some student who seen these being used.  Surely, such a device and its usage will receive attention on the internet, and the genie will be out of the bottle.

Davila cedes the safety problems, but offers reasoning saying that how often do you hear of kids dying from fires in schools, rather than being killed by a crazed shooter and some other appeals to mass hysteria.

If our school leaders love the idea of the Boot, why can't they install doors at the classroom entrance that have the benefits of the Boot (a door very hard to breach from the outside when shut) but not the problems (easy to open from the inside).  Oh, that's right, they already do all around the school; they're called "Fire Exits".

Chiefs of many county rural fire departments passed their own turnout boots around and collected $3450 for installing Boots in Mason County schools.  Nary a word has come from any of them or our law enforcement chiefs about the inherent fire safety problems involved with the Boot, or how it would be so easy for horse-playing students to create potentially dangerous situations with the misuse of the boot.

Once the Boot is installed in Mason County classrooms, any student shooter or other shooter can incorporate this into their plan of mayhem so as to either neutralize the Boot's effects or have it operate in their favor.  Strong doors that can be locked from the inside would be just as effective, and would follow NFPA codes.  Teaching proper lockdown procedures, unlike they recently did at MCC Upper Elementary School, would be good too.
