HAMLIN TOWNSHIP — A US Postal Service vehicle was damaged after it was rear-ended while the carrier was stopped at a mailbox Friday morning in the 5700 block of West Decker Road, between Sherman Road and Jebavy Drive.

The 1991 Grumman postal vehicle was driven by a 51-year-old Ludington man who was stopped at the mailbox at 5742 W. Decker Road, facing eastbound. The vehicle was struck by an eastbound Chevrolet Equinox SUV driven by a 62-year-old Ludington man. Both drivers refused medical treatment by EMS on the scene.

The Equinox suffered considerable front-end damage while the rear of the postal vehicle had some damage, which appeared to be repairable. The driver of the Equinox was issued a ticket by Mason County Sheriff’s Office for driving too fast for conditions.

Also responding to the scene was Hamlin Township Fire Department.

What they are effectively charging him with is section 1 of MCL 257.627, which says:  "a person operating a vehicle on a highway shall operate that vehicle at a careful and prudent speed not greater than nor less than is reasonable and proper, having due regard to the traffic, surface, and width of the highway and of any other condition existing at the time. A person shall not operate a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than that which will permit a stop within the assured, clear distance ahead."

Given the picture of Decker Road with the lack of significant contours and hills to that section of thee road, in the middle of a nice partly cloudy day, I have to agree with you that this is an improper charge.

Right, so, then we go back to "Who was this?"  Was this an inappropriate charge given to someone they know to lessen their liability, less points, less fines... Hitting a Government vehicle that has the Right away is always someone's fault. But, I guess not if you are connected somehow. Different rules for different fools'

Maybe it was MSP Trooper Sammy Seymour in his infamous ORV (shaped like a Chevy Equinox) under an altered state of consciousness?

Your analysis does seem to be the reason why they would screw up the proper charge, John; you worry me when you so thoroughly understand the psychology of our local deputies.
