New Jersey campus police struggled to arrest a 27-year-old college student for more than seven minutes, pepper spraying him in the process, in a video going viral, never once providing probable cause, despite being asked several times.

The video begins with Brookdale Community College police trying to arrest Jeffrey Michel on a bridge while another man stands nearby openly recording.

Michel remains stiff, his hands grasping to the rail, as three cops try to handcuff him. He repeatedly asks the reason for his arrest, but they remain vague, accusing him of “obstructing of identification” and “resisting arrest.”

Eventually more cops arrive and one cop ends up pepper spraying him and they eventually handcuff him, but they never state the reason for his arrest. Read more at: http://www.redbankgreen.com/2014/11/lincroft-arrest-video.html

Perhaps if the police would train their officers on how to deal with the rights of individuals in America, the laws, and their duties as police officers to use their powers to preserve those rights (absent of any crime being committed or strongly suspected), rather than do all that training in warrantless searches, seizing private property, guerrilla tactics, etc., that tend to deprive rights of individuals and abuse the power of the office, we would have officers doing this a lot less often.

This gangland style assault on an innocent man by a mob of police officers makes a convenient argument for those who believe current police policy in most of America is out of control.

I was a bit surprised to see campus security act like this. They do have more latitude in legal matters on campus property, and used to act more as general peace-keeper. Then calling local authorities if the need arises for it. It seems to have escalated toward the end, and I suppose that's when the local LE came into the picture, w/pepper spray etc..

For God's sakes just tell the man why he is being detained and arrested. This is why cops have a bad reputation. They somehow have the opinion that we must follow their orders without question and must do exactly as they say even when no crime has been committed. Until this kind of crap is eliminated the police will not have the respect of freedom loving people. When you give people this kind of power over others then police abuse eventually rears it's ugly head.

This video's original three campus officers of different sexes and ethnicities begin a process of detention of a black man who has not been told of why he is being harassed and arrested.  The video reminded me of what happened with Ludington's own Joseph McAdam, who had committed no crime or aggressive action towards police but was taken down and repeatedly tased on Ludington Avenue in the summer of 2009.

Such actions by derelict police must be dealt with severely by not only their superiors, but the local government that employs them, and especially by the community these rogue felons supposedly serve.
