Supreme Court Makes Decision on Free Speech Issue. You got me, Edie! LOL. I'm definitely straddling the fence on this one. Hope that's ok with all of you. I'm still bothered by the decision, but I was quite surprised at our president calling the SC out in front of the American people. I was disappointed in the SOTU address - it lacked substance.

I was pretty much straddling the fence on this decision, feeling an awful lot like Mary. But when I saw Barack and his liberal cohorts trashing the Court, I realized there must be something positive to this decision if it makes them so upset. Now I am firmly on the SCs side of the fence after looking more closely at it.

From his stand point they weakened free speech as the big lobby's really don't represent real important people. But verily I say unto you.. If I was a SCOTUS.. and an Obama administration advocate come before me on a policy such as don't ask don't tell or such? He would not have a very hard time arguing his stand point to one of my jurors???!!! lol

I think one of the things that Obama needs to work on is in regards of who and when to take swipes at people. The shot at the SCOTUS during the SOTU address was not very presidential IMO, I also think the swipe at TV pundits wasn't needed during the address. Maybe its just me but it just seems a bit petty to feel that you would have to do that in that sort of a situation.

I thought it was an inexcusable dis to the Supreme Court when Prez Obama criticized this ruling when he gave his state of the union address. The Court had strengthened the rights of the people (albeit corporate), lessened the power of the gov't, in the freedom of speech arena, and he chided/lectured them for doing so in this public forum. Can you imagine the hullaballoo in the media if Prez Bush had rebuked the SCOTUS for strengthening free speech rights?

Two of the major reasons the Tea Party Movements originated were because people saw the government becoming more powerful, and gaining control over corporations they had no right to (auto companies, financial institutions, etc.). When the government begins making laws (like McCain-Feingold), that violate the constitutional rights of corporations, they can then extend that precedent into violating the rights of individuals.
Either that, or unequally enforce such laws so that corporations out of favor with the incumbent administration (donkey or elephant) are targeted. My opinion is that if even one person's or corporation's rights are diminished, the government's power grows-- and they are already too powerful; more so than our nation's founders would be happy with. Yes. I've become quite disenfranchised with both parties. I did have hope, though, that President Obama could effect positive change for the middle class. BTW, isn't his expertise in constitutional law?

The main stream media attempted to ignore the tea baggers calling them names and trying to tie them to big money which wasn't there. Fox was really the only media outlet who saw them as more grass roots but look how a seat held by a democrat for over 4 decades fell to pressure from tea baggers?

I understand this feeling of your Mary I really do. And I do believe that sometimes corperations do bad things not in the common mans better interests. I guess i just don't believe the U.S. government has a better track record maybe? I'll post more latter but no Mary I really am not a pit bull about issues as much as some on the left think. Actually I might be closer to someone like max? maybe?? I believe The government needs to follow the constitution or it becomes worse than the evil companies it chooses to demonize here. but even though our views are different in bia to say companies I think we both see the government is the largest corporation which also only serves its self at this point in history.
