I've seen those ice balls before, but I've always been absent a camera when I have.  This manifestation reminded me of some of the dry ponds with clay beds that you might find out at the state park, that, when the water dries up, the pond bottom cracks and makes a lot of natural clay plates curved upward.  Nature loves her crafts.

It's amazing what nature creates. A lot of times these ice pads turn into ice balls when the waves roll them around.
