Felony as overused charge for most crimes.

I was watching lockup http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27118605/ this past weekend.

 

I feel that many crimes that are charged as felonies and even high court misdemeanors Should just be a regular misdemeanor.

 

I think felony charges should be save for those crimes which really do harm to animals, people or property. Murder, rape, pedophiles, armed robbery(including burglary, larceny), assault(real assault, not a bar fight or domestic violence)

 

Being the country with the highest prison population in the world makes me think that we are putting people behind bars who should be given a different type of sentence.

 

It almost seems like they hand out felonies so that they can take away a persons rights. Not because of the actual crime commited. And it seems so many people who go into prison really don't belong there.
