It's that time of the year again when the dead and the undead start walking along the roads going trick-or-treating or just walking to a costume party.  An incident that occurred in Nunica (about 10 mi. west of Muskegon in Ottawa County) shows that even if someone is wearing a zombie costume you should not run into them unless a full-fledged zombie apocalypse has been officially declared.

If you are driving a vehicle and believe you have hit someone, you always need to stop and lend aid and call for help if necessary.  Unless you were totally negligent, you almost always will be given a free pass.  But if you run off without stopping, the law then treats you as a felon, and if the person hit dies, then you suffer even worse penalties (MCL 257.617).

So even if you feel the whole object of going around like the walking dead is a bizarre fetish and the people are preventing you from getting from point A to point B in as quick a time as you'd like, drive with caution around them.  Particularly on the evenings when kids will be going around seeking candy in costumes that sometimes restrict their vision.

It's easy to fault the zombie in the article from Nunica, but the street view shows that the area is mixed residential, the speed limit is 35 mph, and there was a road shoulder which presumably was where the 'zombie' was hit.

CROCKERY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department is looking for a driver who hit a pedestrian and took off Saturday night.

The incident happened just before 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Main Street and Cass Street in Crockery Township.

According to a news release, 45-year-old Jeffrey Allan Stiles from Muskegon, was at a Halloween party when he decided to go outside. He began walking along the roadway to scare cars because he was dressed as a zombie.

Stiles was then struck by a car traveling northbound on Main Street and that driver did not stop.

Deputies said Stiles was taken to a hospital and is listed in good condition.

The crash remains under investigation.
