Sports Central!

Love sports? Talk about it here! Talk smack on your favorite team or take digs at your favorite nemisis. Talk about local, regional, state or national sports!

Good idea, Dave. Sports is a bit more fun to argue/agree with others about likenesses/differences in opinion than political topics are.
  • Dave

I would have to agree with that sentiment.

Great weekend for Michigan sports team this last weekend... Tigers won, Lions Won, MSU won and Michigan won in a thrilling come from behind battle against the evil Notre Dame... Let's hope the following weeks will have the same outcomes!
  • XLFD

Tigers are now up to 12 games in a row with a thrilling comeback from three runs down in the ninth.  Two pinch-hit dingers, then a run in the tenth to send the Windy City fans home disappointed once again, after being Verlander's 23rd victim the previous day.

You know it has been a great weekend for sports in the area Dave when MSU's 44-0 victory is placed on the third page of the sports section, behind a classic beating of Notre Dame by the Wolverines (don't feed 'em), and significant victories by the Lions and Tigers throughout the weekend.

It's a great time to be following regional pro and college sports in this area.  Green Bay and Detroit (yes, Detroit) are undefeated going into week 5, the Detroit Tigers looks to go deep into the playoffs after handing the Yankees their second defeat.  Michigan and Michigan State are poised for football bowl games and national recognition as they prepare for their annual smackdown betwixt them.  The Red Wings look to be formidable once again and are just in the wings.
  • Dave

Yup, in a state where there is a lot of bad as far as the economy goes, its nice to have something positive happening in the state with the many sports teams doing well.. will be nice if at least one or more of them can bring home a championship to top it off
  • AQUAMAN

The TIGERS WON! TIGERS WIN! Yankees go home! Tigs going to World Series again, hooray for our team! GO TIGS!
  • XLFD

Let's not count the Rangers out before they drop four more.  Hey, I forgot to call out the Brewers when I was talking about how good it was to be a sports fan in this area; they just might play opposite in the series.
  • Dave

Could be the Lake Michigan series
  • XLFD

Unless Detroit expands the outfield of their park by a few hundred miles, I guess we'd have to settle for a Lake Michigan- Lake St. Clair series.

  • XLFD

Congratulations to Miguel Cabrera who won Baseball's coveted triple crown, leading the league in RBIs, HRs, and Batting Average.  This is the first time it has been accomplished since Carl Yasztremski did it 45 years ago.  The Tigers go into the playoffs against the usual nemesis, the New York Yankees.  With last year's and this year's MVP.  Look out world.

  • AQUAMAN

Best of luck to our TIG's, they are still the best in my heart and mind.

  • XLFD

All four first round playoff series went to the maximum amount of games (5) in all contests.  The last had an amazing comeback by the St. Louis Cardinals.  Behind 6-0 they crept back and won 9-7 just minutes ago.  SF Giants, Detroit and the NY Yankees are all going on.

Here's a baseball stat for Manager Jim Leyland:

    Playoff Statistics (through 7 games):

    Valverde:  2.3 Innings pitched, 7 Runs, Runs/game: 27.00

Rest of Detroit staff:  62.3 Innings pitched, 8 Runs, Runs/game: 1.16

    Adapt accordingly.

From tonight's Tigers-Mariners game, Prince Fielder chases a foul ball and gets a nacho, over and over again.  Tigers win 5-4 reducing their magic number once again:

  • AQUAMAN

That's a great distraction and funny as Hell, thanks. GO Tigs!

  • XLFD

Michigan State wins the Rose Bowl 24-20.

Had to share this video of a local college baseball game won by a 'walk-off' steal of home by a crafty base runner:

A 1-7 Detroit Lions team goes to a 6-2 Green Bay team at Lambeau Field and wins?!  I already inked this one in as a loss for the Motor City; Aquaman, you owe me some white out.

  • Dave

Its probably safe to say that deep down most Lions fans figured the game @ Green Bay would be another loss... I was as surprised as anyone to see them win the game. I was having dinner with the folks down in Battle Creek and kept checking my phone for the score and kept being surprised when I'd see that the Lions were ahead. As far as the Packers go, you got to wonder what's going on with them, they started out like gangbusters racking up a 6-0 record but now have lost 3 in a row and most in the media seem to think that loss #4 is going to be coming this weekend.

  • XLFD

Michigan State takes it on a tremendous drive lasting most of the fourth quarter, scoring their first touchdown of the game in the final half minute, 16-13 over Iowa.

  • XLFD

The playoff-overperforming Ludington Orioles Boys Basketball squad got playoff-overwhelmed tonight by Hudsonville in the state semifinals by nearly 40 points.  It would have been a Cinderella story if a squad that went under .500 for the season went to the finals, but it wasn't meant to be, thanks for your efforts.

LHS Orioles tonight played great at Oriole Field, won over the Fremont Packers 41-22. Score at halftime was 34-0, a blowout. Some great players making the most of the shore 6 game season this year, congrats. guys!

  • AQUAMAN

LHS Orioles at it again tonight at Oriole Field, over the Orchard View Cardinals by a score of 63 - 8, big win, and a great team to watch on the field on both offense and defense. Big Congrats to our boys for a job well done.

  • AQUAMAN

LHS Orioles repeat with another Big WIN tonight at Oriole Field 21 - 7, another great football game. This is the best team I've seen in several years, perhaps even better. Next week the Orioles will again play at home against Manistee.

  • XLFD

Four home games in a row!?  I'll have to try and catch the Orioles manhandling the Manistee Chips on Friday.

  • AQUAMAN

LHS Homecoming game tonight. Unfortunately, LHS bows to Manistee 20-21, bad loss. The game saw LHS with 2 interceptions, and a fumble to lose, worst mistakes I've seen from our Orioles this season.

  • AQUAMAN

LHS Orioles at it again with big win of 18 - 15 against the Bay City squad.  There was a TD by Bay City leaving only 1:30 on the clock to closing, but, we did make a TD to win the first playoff game after 6 unsuccessful attempts in the recent past, GO ORIOLES GO!

  • AQUAMAN

LHS Orioles played the Soo Ste. Marie squad tonight at Oriole Field. Sadly, we lost in the very last 2 seconds or so 16-22, and our season is over this year. The Orioles did play with strength, class, and toughness, but the last seconds were a miracle for the opponents. We'll be back next year with alot of returning players, maybe we can do even better I sure hope.

  • XLFD

Thanks for being our high school football reporter this year, Aquaman.  Very competitive team bodes well for next year.

Match-up of two 7-0 Big Ten football programs at noon today.  Prediction:  MSU 30, Michigan 28.
