The anti-heroes that were portrayed often by Eastwood and McQueen generally are not very popularly regarded by other characters in their movies. But generally, they do appeal to the movie viewer on a very personal and primal level. Everyone has an internalized sense of fairness and justice, and at times I try to appeal to that.
Lt Bullitt and Diry Harry had a lot in common with you X, in a round-about way. Trying to clean up the system, while being a vital part of it, well, someone has to clean up the mess, even if it's not the most popular guy or method that gets the job done!
