(I didn't do this in my case as the manual gearbox donor was a non-VANOS 535i & the recipient/victim was a VANOS'ed 540i). FWIW., I MoT'ed it when it was still equipped with a (rather poorly..) autobox, mainly to see if the test revealed any horrors. It passed, so the manual conversion started. Thanks Given the electronic hassle you can have with a bog standard E39 like mine, does this conversion not have the potential to give you hours of pain if any of it goes wrong, or bits need replacing, coding etc? Especially as BMW never offered a manual V8 E38. It is worth noting - even with the EWS coded, the DME still would produce P0600. This seems to be unique to e36 M3 sedans only - it seems that all other manual swaps involving an MS41 are able to eliminate P0600 by coding EWS and then clearing DME adaptations and errors. The car starts and accelerates correctly but the cruise control function does not work, the DDE unit shows a failure due to communication with the EGS unit (I have removed it). The swap seems fairly straight forward. The coding side of it appears relatively easy with my MS43 DME. May be some small pedal issues as they appear to have changed things around in Sept '97.
