I just did the Keeley Seeing eye and Ultra mods to a Boss DS-1 I picked up cheap - man did that make a difference! I never heard an old - or vintage - DS-1, but my opinion about the 'new' DS-1s is that they are basically useless unless you like the wasp in the jar. I also like the analogman mods, and after talking to stratdeluxer, it sounds like he does a similar if not identical mod as analogman. I just modded my ds-1 distortion with the Keeley All Seeing Eye and Ultra mods. I noticed that it has a hell of a lot more gain, but it also took away a lot of the highs and enhanced the lows. I've done a few DS-1 mods (Keeley SEM, diode swaps, transistor swaps ect..)and they all sound good in one way or another. Having said that, I am afraid our good buddy the DS-1 will never sound like an overdrive.
