Checklist of ichneumonid parasitoid wasps in Switzerland (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae): 470 species new for the country and an appraisal of the alpine Ichneumonid wasps Family Ichneumonidae Description and life history: Adult ichneumonids are black with lighter-colored legs and usually slender, with the abdomen longer than the head and thorax combined. They have long antennae, with 16 or more segments. Females have a long ovipositor. Family ICHNEUMONIDAE - Ichneumon Wasps Members in this family have long and thin body, with narrow waist like wasps. Adults are active in day time and feed on flowers. Some species are colourful. Adults are minute to very large in size. Identification key to the subfamilies of Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera) Gavin Broad Dept. of Entomology, The Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London SW7 5BD, UK Notes on the key, February 2011 This key to ichneumonid subfamilies should be regarded as a test version and feedback will be much appreciated (emails to g.broad@nhm.ac.uk). Without stating the obvious, members of the Ichneumonidae family are wasp-like in appearance. Though ichneumonid wasps are one of the larger parasitic wasps, adults vary in color, form, markings, and size. Generally speaking, they are elongate and slender but, again, their size is somewhat host-dependent. Ichneumonid Wasps (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae): their Classification and Biology (Handbooks for the Identification of British Insects 7/12) by Broad, G.r.; Shaw, M.r.; Fitton, M.g. at Pemberley Books Theme Oxley Nepal Slate Thistle Overview: This family of parasitic wasps contains an estimated 60,000 species which are classified into 36 subfamilies. Natural history: Ichneumoninae is the second largest subfamily of the family Ichneumonidae. All individuals of this subfamily are internal parasites of the order Lepidoptera. Ichneumon wasps, like most other wasps belonging to 'Parasitica', are parasitoids. Most attack the larvae of Lepidoptera and sawflies (Symphyta: Hymenoptera), including many economic pests within these groups. However a wide range of other insects and non-insect arthropods are also parasitised. Their life-strategies are diverse. The superfamily Ichneumonoidea contains the two largest families within Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae and Braconidae. The group is thought to contain as many as 100,000 species, many of which have not yet been described. Like other parasitoid wasps, they were long placed in the "Parasitica", variously considered as an infraorder or an unranked clade, now known to be paraphyletic This selection of books includes those reviewed in the latest issue of British Wildlife.
