COLDNews Runs Story About the Dangers of Reserve Officers

The editors of the City of Ludington Daily News (COLDNews), didn't apparently read this story that they printed verbatim when it came over the wire from the Associated Press (AP). Reserve officers without formal training, out-of-town residency and packing police powers and pistols running amuck in a small town.
But never has the COLDNews said anything about our own reserve force, and the sergeant on that illegitimate force that is mayor of this town in violation of the Incompatible Offices Act. Selective blindness?

I'm glad there are some real journalist left. I have family that lives in Barry County. But they didn't hear about this.

Meet a Town That's Had Enough of Militarized Policing  reads the headline in Reason Magazine about Barry Township and the troubles within.

And one of the incidences leading up to this is further explained by L.L. Brasier of the Detroit Free Press:

Early morning May 10, Jack Nadwornik stepped behind Tujax Tavern, the bar and restaurant he has owned for 30 years in this small, western Michigan town.

Nadwornik, out drinking with friends for his 58th birthday, urinated in a corner of the empty parking lot because the bar was locked up.

Within seconds, two Barry Township police cars and three officers — two of them unpaid reserves — confronted him as he was zipping up his pants. What happened next is up for debate: Police said he resisted arrest. Nadwornick said he didn’t, and a waitress who was leaving work agreed.

What everyone does agree on is the aftermath: Nadwornik had a broken hand from a police baton, bloody elbows, and he had been kneed in the back. He was handcuffed, jailed and charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, a two-year felony.

Constance Cheeseman has been following the story all along in a very good display of journalistic integrity for the Hastings newspaper.  She actually covers both sides of the story, not just the official side-- and she covers the full story.  I invite our friends at the COLDNews to look in on the Hastings Banner and see what they should be doing rather than printing AP stories and official news releases.

We need a Constance Cheeseman on the LDN to help report the truth here too. Maybe she could do a feature story on the Banner about Ludington?
