People from all over Michigan crawled out of bed before sunrise Wednesday for a chance to see the lunar eclipse and a moon awash in a glorious shade of red.

The total lunar eclipse began more than an hour before sunrise around 6:25 a.m. Oct. 8 as the moon entered the Earth's shadow. About a half hour later, only a silhouette was visible in the western sky. Viewers only had a short time to take in the spectacle. Once sunrise came, the views were over.

The sight was called a "blood moon" because Earth's shadow projected a red color on the moon.
