Knock Boxes Not Just for Espresso Anymore Claims COLDNews

A Knock Box is a device used to store spent espresso grounds and traditionally costs as low as $15. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knockbox). Patti Klevorn reports that LFD Fire Chief Funk is trying to sell them for $265 minimum, making the claim they can be used to safely store keys for business owners. Won't the keys get coffee-stained?

Knox boxes on the other hand are an option that some business owners may use to allow emergency personnel to enter their buildings during an emergency.

Also consider that our area's fire departments are all volunteer departments (closest full time department is Manistee).  At the fire station itself, the access is typically not by key, but by door combination, so that firefighters can get in quick.  During my eight years at the Ludington Fire Department, our entry code never changed, and it may still be the same for all I know.   They did install an internal alarm system after awhile for a backup, but again, that had a combination code that may still be the same.

The point being that this door code is shared with not only the firefighters, but they may share it with their family members, vehicle repair and other trusted contractors had the code, other city officials had the code.  The master Knox box key could be removed or copied by any of these people and/or their associates by just depressing three numbers on the door of the fire station and walking to the fire engine's key compartment.  Feel safe yet?

If the Chief has his way my bet is Ludington will end up with this scenario.

I'm glad you cleared that up. I thought you were talking about my old girl friend Susy Knock.
