I didn't see where this event hit the LDN nor any local news outlet. Ohio woman fell out of wheelchair off the north breakwall, into the cold lake. 911 unable to be contacted after some time too. Where's the beach safety patrol when needed?

You might want to double check your news source, I believe I noticed this coming across the news almost live on Tuesday morning, and that's how all the news sources reported it.  Knowing the track record of our media, I wouldn't put it past them to have time-lapse reporting.  The emergency phone idea is a good one for out at the lighthouse, we had two deaths happen there in 2010 and a few near misses since.

Both reports are coming 24-48 hrs. late. I heard this happened around 10am Monday, 10/14, so they muffed the ball on reporting timely. Award winning reporters and staff? Hardy har to that! The Beach Safety Patrol is a joke, whether in moth balls, or active, simply look at the casualties/close casualties and it's not rocket science. Why isn't there an emergency 911 phone out on the pierhead, just in case? Going thru Muskegon and having to transfer to Oceana is ridiculous. If not for the husband and bystander's immediate assistance, this woman would also be a casualty. This is something that should have been addressed again at the Monday City Council Mtg. and wasn't! Certainly the Chief of LPD/LFD had to know much earlier in the day too, and declined to illuminate on the close call.

Undoubtedly, the "Recovery Rangers" couldn't get past all those fences.  But to be fair, they go to mothballs until next Memorial Day weekend.  That's a nice crisp picture of the lighthouse, Aquaman.

It did appear in the MCP yesterday, but update me if there is more to the story:

"LUDINGTON — A 62-year-old Ohio woman was saved from Lake Michigan this morning after she fell off the breakwater. The wheelchair-bound woman had fallen off the north pier breakwater after she and her husband stopped to take a picture.

Ludington Police Sgt. Matt McMellen said this was their first time visiting Ludington and they were about 75 feet from the lighthouse. “Her husband stopped to take a picture and he didn’t set the brake on the wheelchair. It appears a gust of wind pushed her into the rocks off the breakwater.”

McMellen said the woman went into the water and was then rescued by her husband and other bystanders. “They were able to keep her from going back into the water but weren’t able to get her on the flat portion of the breakwater.” Ludington police and firefighters, along with Life EMS ambulance personnel were able to securely get her onto a flat surface, he said.

The woman was taken by ambulance to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital. McMellen said she did not appear to be suffering from any serious injuries. He said bystanders had a difficult time using their cell phones to call 911, which is possibly attributed to today’s fiber optic power outages (see related story). Their calls were eventually re-routed to the Muskegon County 911 center, which then relayed the information to Mason-Oceana 911."

The COLDNews had a story come out early this morning.  A bit late like the response team:   http://www.shorelinemedia.net/ludington_daily_news/news/local/artic...
