The Capt. is Jim Winfield from Southgate, Mi. from what I understand, best to ask him. Supposed to be a great tackle shop owner, and inventor of the "Ugly Stick" rod. I also have an article on the MCP released as early report that this was on a charter, and he docks at Harbor View Marina, another publicly funded marina that has severely cramped other "private local marina owners" by taking Charter Boats against their very own written and signed agreements with the State of Michigan. !
What I don't understand is if the fog was thick enough to obscure vision of the breakwater, shore and lights and if the electronics went out, why was he traveling at such a high rate of speed. I would have immediately slowed down to a no wake speed or stopped so I could assess what was going on and possibly determine where I was in relation to the harbor entrance.
Not a laughing matter for any mariner. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt from all reports I got thus far. The "fog bank" that came in from offshore was the main cause, per early reports. It was also said the elctronics all went out and caused additional confusion. I just slipped into the harbor 10-20 minutes before this happened. Abrahamson's Marine will be doing the salvage work Tuesday. The spectators are also blocked off now with a DPW barracade, thank God.
It looks as if the breakwall denied the fishing/pleasure boat the ability to ram the freighter.
