For all of last week, last Tuesday thru this Monday, the homeowner or their hired help raked this large batch of leaves unto the west side of North Lakeshore for pickup by the City. This shoulder is what the State DOT calls a 'dedicated bike path' and should be kept clear of obstructions, otherwise the person creating such a traffic hazard may liable for a civil infraction or even a misdemeanor. Plus more liabilities may ensue to the adjacent property owner if a bicycle or other legitimate user of the shoulder injures themselves due to this placement. If you live on this stretch of road, please be courteous and keep your leaves off the bike path.

Thanks for bringing this up again X. This morningThose piles are now gone but yesterday my front tire hit the edge of one of those piles. The pile extended over the bike lane line and into the traffic lane. I almost lost control because what I hit was not leaves. The pile was laced with compacted grass clippings and brush. I almost called the police to report it. One day there will be an accident caused by this careless piling of debris in the road. I hate to call the people who pile this stuff in the road stupid but I'm afraid that exactly what they are. Pile your crap off the road and on the grass next to the road.

Thank you Luanne for getting the word out!  This happens every year, nothing ever changes even when our council passes a 'Complete Streets Resolution' and stresses making Ludington more walkable and ridable, but this picture shows someone completely blocking an actual bike lane on Bryant, which is technically a misdemeanor.

Letter to the Editor, by LuAnne Winiecke, Ludington.

Again this year property owners along North Lakeshore Drive and on Bryant Road are putting their leaves and yard waste in the bike-pedestrian pathways.

First of all, it makes it dangerous for the persons using those paths (for what they were intended for) to have to go out into the traffic lanes when they come to these areas. Also, it makes it dangerous for drivers when the yard waste is on the roadway in some instances. I was driving north on Lakeshore Drive just north of Tinkham Avenue this week and a jogger pushing a stroller had to go out in the traffic lane, and I had to veer in the turn lane to avoid a accident. I do think the city will pick up the leaves/yard waste when it is called, but why is it allowed in the first place? Doesn’t the city have a leaf corral on Bryant Road for this purpose? I’m sure there are a million excuses why, but the facts are, it’s a bike-pedestrian lane, and it is dangerous!

I live right off the lake, so all the leaves get blown inland.  Eastwick, give me a call next year if you need some help with your leaves; I never get enough from my backyard to fill those orange yard pumpkins I'd love to put out.
