2-15-2013 meteorite in Chelyabinsk

Reports are that at least 400 people have been injured in a very sparsely populated area, many from shattered glass as windows broke with the sonic boom that accompanied the meteor. It has been confirmed that fragments of the meteor have hit the ground. About 600 square meters (6000 square feet) of a roof at a zinc factory had collapsed. There was no immediate clarification of whether the collapse was caused by meteorites or by a shock wave from one of the explosions. The meteor occurred occurred at 9:20 AM local time. Also, there was a major earthquake in Russia, near Sakha (Siberia). It was magnitude 6.6 and was relatively shallow at 6.3 miles underground. The quake occurred at 1:13 AM local time. Siberia has been even colder than usual this month. Oymyakon had a low temperature of -70F on Wednesday. The warmest temperature they have had this month is -41F. They are 4.8 degrees colder than average for the first 2 weeks of February. Verkoyansk was -69F Wednesday morning. Their warmest temperature this month has been -47F and they are 7 degrees colder than average for February.
