Follow up:

According to TODAY, Tara is a stray that the family adopted about six  years ago after she followed them home from a park while Jeremy’s parents were  dating. She would sleep with Jeremy in his crib when he was a baby, they  said.

The family says she’s normally a very laid back cat, so they were surprised  at her big rescue. After hurtling herself at the neighbor’s dog, she made sure  he ran away and then actually appears to go back and check on Jeremy.

Jeremy’s parents said their three young sons can be rough with her sometimes,  but Tara puts up with it.

The dog involved in the attack may have to be euthanized.

Never seen a dog do anything that strange to a child unless provoked somehow. What's even more amazing is the cat protecting it's owners, never seen that either before. Those injuries are terrible too. I guess they'll have to put the dog down, sad, but probably necessary now. Anyone recognize that breed of dog?

Amazing. I hope cat haters can appreciate them a little more. I didn't like cats until I took in a stray. They're not like dogs but they can make very good pets and need only a minimum of care. I wonder if the dog, seeing the boys ankles and shoes from under the car mistook them for something else and continued to focus on them while ignoring who they were attached to.

On May 13, a dog uncharacteristically attacked this boy and it was caught on two security cameras.  Also, uncharacteristically, a smaller cat immediately joins the fray and scares the bully away, saving the boy from a more severe mauling.
