how to request info thru FOIA

How would I request a document from the school system thru to FOIA? its pertaining to a program at LAS that is state funded - the Great Start Readiness Program - and I want to request information on how a certain child qualified for that program - I think there is something falsified or something - both parent work for LAS district and I personally don't think the qualify for this program under state guidelines yet somehow he is still in the program (and assaulting kids in the mean time) so I am in the process of filing a complaint about the assaultive behavior, but want to get as much info as I can - and this is one thing I need.  Anyone know how to go about getting this info or filing a FOIA?

yes we did!! even though the neighborhood was bad (for ludington that is), there were a handfull of us that made it "out of there" alive so to say, thanks to parents, like u & mine,  who cared :)  If I or my brother behaved the way this child does - it would of been fixed quickly! but alas times have changed!

oh yes that I have heard, "times have changed" daughter in law has told many stories of the "terrior" kids she has had.  Most of these kids need an "old fashion attention getting whack".  But heaven forbid you do that to your own child now a days and the school finds out or someone else. Or better yet the kid themselves know how to work the system. You'd have Family Service's on your door step.

Let me know as this has me very bothered. This brings back memories of what my son had to go through. Remember Mr. Nordine? he was a nightmare for me and my husband.

Oh yes! I remember Mr. Nordine - who could forget him!! LOL! ugh! glad I dont have to worry about my son having him as a teacher! anyways - so I talked with Mr.Erickson - he said the school had a meeting with the childs parents & then the child and his parents with the school liason officer.  So maybe meeting with the cop will scare some crap into him -who knows?  But I just called the school & spoke with the officer to make sure this meeting really did take place - that officer is a DICK!! he is like I have no idea who you are etc... the info you request I cannot give you etc... I'm like if my child wasn't the other one involved than how would I know all this information? He then stated that I was making a big deal out of nothing, it was just some child hood playground crap and that I should just leave it alone. Ha! ugh LPD's finest!! I said that he, being a law enforcement officer, should know that starting early to put an end to this stuff can save alot of trouble in the long run etc...... and he said something about me profiling him & I have no idea who he is or what I am talking about.  Then he said I was making a big deal on this because of the kids race!! (he is mixed I guess) well too bad cuz guess what? my son is part hispanic - so race has nothing to do with it.  All I want is documentation on this incident in case it happens again & I don't want my son to get in trouble if it ever comes down to him having to defend himself.! ugh !! I am sooooooooo PISSED off now - eff LPD - PM school did the right thing & I am happy with what they did on the situation but now LPD is going to get an ear full!

Good luck with this Angela.  Remember you are dealing with an arm of government, the public schools and the local hierarchs, so you will have to stick with it if you want anything done.

ya I know! I talked with Mr. Horowski & let him know what was going on & he was like basically what do u want me to do type thing?  I said I want to report this officers behavior & he told me to write a letter & send it to him & Cal Dekuiper. He thinks I wont write the letter but I will and it will be emailed AND sent certified mail.  I also talked to LPD captain and he said he will talk with the officer & get his side of the story and the call me and see where it goes from there. I guess this isn't the first time this officer questions someone motives on a situation because of another person's race (when race has never been a factor) ugh!! some cops!!!

One thing you can learn here Angela is what X always says. he won't CALL anyone. X has a good point to ALWAYS use a documented format to communicate with people. Letters, or email only.

No phone, unless of course you have the ability to record that as well as asking the other persons permission to do so before begining the conversation(otherwise it would be illegal to record a phone convo as I am sure everyone here knows).

 

Wanda, as a side topic to this thread...this here issue that Angela is dealing with is a great example of why X won't call you(or others). That liaison officer can say anything he wants and who are they gonna believe a civilian or a cop(board member, etc...)?
