Police and media often do their best to misrepresent a "motorcycle accident" just like they do for "bicycle accidents".  At around noon today, a West Michigan motorcyclist was killed, not by accident, but by a motorist not paying due attention before making a turn.

You wouldn't get that if you read the two stories that were written by local media covering the incident, those who received their recap by police agencies that used euphemisms to protect the driver and effectively slander the biker.  Fortunately, WOOD TV took a picture of the accident scene and it totally refutes the silliness of the narrative and the headline, which refers to this as strictly a 'motorcycle crash':

1 airlifted to hospital after motorcycle crash in Holland Twp

HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A person suffered life-threatening injuries after a crash between a motorcycle and a car in Holland Township late Sunday morning, Ottawa County deputies said.

The crash happened around 11:50 a.m. near East Lakewood Boulevard and North Park Drive.

Authorities say a car, driven by a 31-year-old of Holland Township, was waiting to make a turn when a motorcycle hit it as it began to turn.

The 31-year-old sustained minor injuries and was not taken to the hospital. The motorcyclist, a 26-year-old of Zeeland, was taken to the hospital by Aero Med with life-threatening injuries.

Deputies say the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Additionally FOX 17 reported this version:  "The investigation shows a motorcycle driven by a Zeeland City resident, 26, was west bound on Lakewood Blvd. The rider was not wearing a helmet and struck a Honda Civic making a turn."

The helmetless motorcyclist hit the car as it began to turn says the WOOD summary, the helmetless motorcyclist struck a car while it was making a turn, says FOX 17.  One would think the motorcyclist was the one driving poorly.  The picture taken, showing damage to both car and bike, oil & debris spots on the road, points to a scenario better described as this:

A 31 year old driver turned his car towards a private drive from a left-turn lane and directly in front of a 26 year old motorcyclist proceeding lawfully down the road causing an unpreventable collision that sent the biker to the hospital with critical injuries.  The motorcyclist has since died from injuries, the driver who appears to be at fault either through distraction or negligence will likely remain uncharged for causing the loss of this young man's life.

How can a journalist taking such a picture write a 'news article' that makes the motorcyclist victim appear at fault in both the headline and the body of the story, when it's obvious that the driver did not observe the biker's right of way?
