During the whole recall Scott Walker fiasco in Wisconsin there were some points scored on both sides of the issue for public union power. One of the weakest ones I heard was a head of a local union in Wisconsin who's talking point seemed to be now the public will be less safe because some woman teachers in some local district would have to wear heals to work.

My thoughts are two fold here. One.. since when is being dressed up an looking professional an unsafe act? Sure I guess you can stretch as say if a woman teacher was teaching an industrial class such as wood shop or metals shop running to the aid of a student who got his/her head stuck in a lathe could be an issue. But guess what ? OSHA Standards already deal with that situation, and that would trump any local dress code.

Secondly...  Because so many government regulations have been passed in the last couple of decades why do unions seem to push the envelope of what is needed by the workforce they are here to represent? Shortly after Metal Works broke a strike by hiring people all to willing to work for the pay and benefits offered by that company. I now find myself in a town who's local Potato Chip company, ( Wise) has authorized a strike This particular area seems to have more jobs available that Ludington did back then. The sticking point here is many of these workers have been working 12 hour days ( Mandatory overtime ) When I read this at first I thought okay they have a beef. I would feel unsafe around machinery with folks who didn't get much rest between shifts for month on end... Then I read the kicker. The management was willing to add workers to relief the mandatory overtime. These would have been part time no benefit positions to save money so the union people would still get most of what they wanted. The union here says no dice.. those jobs would then all become lower paying non union jobs. We have a stand off now... My thoughts Many many companies now hire through temp agencies for this very reason. As an employer I would not want to add more full time employees until I was sure that I could continue to employ them.  What say you ?????

Does the Union offer any solution that does not involve hiring more full-time, union members?

Truthfully XL.. I have not really seen all the info as like in our area the papers coverage of this matter seems to be lacking. But the media blitz here seems to be the battle cry of the union stating they will strike to save full-time union jobs. That fact alone tends to make me suspicious as it is the employer who produces the jobs for these people that they get paid for. I did see something about the union talking about adding a shift of union workers which seems to be the one thing the company does not want to do at this point sighting future production concerns.
