I rarely seem to agree with LDN editorials (or understand their point), but today I made an exception.  In a piece called "Time to End President's Day as a Paid Holiday" (p. 4), the editors made the point that President's Day (and Columbus Day) should be re-evaluated as a paid holiday for government workers.  Pointing to the fact that few other employers recognize these second-tier holidays as a reason to take a day off, they acknowledge it might not make such a big difference or be much of a sacrifice for the public workers, but it would be a reasonable and equitable thing to do.  They very tepidly endorse this measure and lastly ask the reader "What do you think?"   Well...?

Personally...

I think it should be up to the individual businesses as to what they can afford to make paid days off.

The employees can then vote with their feet if they don't like the cheap skate employers call.

Not even all school systems take the day off as it is.

Until they consider to do it, apparently the government thinks we can afford it!

If Presidents Washington, Lincoln, and Mr. Christopher Columbus lose such status, I believe it is only right to also cut Veteran's Day and MLK Day as well.  I greatly respect all five entities, but few public sector jobs actually recognize these four days as paid holidays.  As for the latter two, the public workers already get Thanksgiving and New Year's Day off in the same month.

In the private sector, workers usually get a certain number of PTO (paid time off) days each year. Usually they use those hours towards the holidays listed, Medicare requires those in rehab to be treated the number of days listed regardless of holiday or not. I used to be able to count on working on holidays because everyone wanted off.

What I don't understand is if  people are not allowed to mention Christmas, why are those offices closed on Christmas day...or any holiday.  Schools are not allowed to say Christmas break or Easter break...why should government offices be closed? They should also be open on weekend since Sunday is considered a Christian day of rest.

According to ACLU separation lawsuits, I think governmental offices should be open 365 days a year to accommodate the needs of those who do not celebrate any holidays...Just saying what is logical.

Your logic is logical, but scary.  They cause enough damage by just working around 65% of the days.
