I'll start the ball rolling here.... feel free to add your reviews here! I am going to start with a recent favorite....

The Blind Side

This is one of my favorite movies of recent. For those unfamiliar with the movie (which is based on a true story), is about a 16 year old African American boy that is taken in by a well to do family. The young man turns out to be a rather good football player who ends up being drafted in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft.

One of the things I liked most about this movie is that you don't have to be a football fan to enjoy it. I took the folks to see the movie about a month ago which in its self is a bit of a miracle since the last time they went to the movies was to go see "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" which I believe came out in the 90's. The acting is pretty decent and their is enough humor and drama in it to keep the movie flowing along pretty good. I've seen it a few times and will be buying the movie as soon as it hits DVD. Sandra Bullock did a wonderful job and has already been rewarded with several awards already and was nominated for a Academy Award.

So in other words, if you want to go see a good movie still playing in many theaters (although unfortunately not the local Ludington theater), good see this one!

I am going to give this movie a rating of 5 Torches! (5 Torches being the best rating)

Well, in this day and age, your almost always going to see computer animated stuff in most movies like the Hulk. The newer movie did have improved computer animation though... one of these days they wont need actors anymore. Like I say though, it was a better movie then the one that came out in the early 2000's with Eric Bana... the older one was just to long and to boring. This newer one was definitely a improvement on the previous one... a lot more action, better story and it didn't over stay its welcome so to speak. Definitely worth renting at some point if your into super hero oriented movies. I also liked that the newer movie payed homage to both Lou Ferrigno and Bill Bixby. Obviously they couldn't have Bill Bixby do a walk on since he passed away a few years back so instead, in one of the early scenes of the movie, Bruce Banner/The Hulk is watching some TV and happened upon a old American TV show called "The Courtship Of Eddie's Father" which of course starred Bixby. Ferrigno does make a cameo in the movie, play a security guard at a college that Bruce Banner is trying to sneak into. Anyway, here are a few pics from the newer movie:

The Wolf Man

Stars Anthony Hopkins and Benicio Del Toro. This is a redo of the old Wolf Man movies that many of us seen when we were kids. I don't think anyone is ever going to be as good as Lon Chaney in the role of the Wolf Man but I think they did a reasonably good job with this telling of the Wolf Man. Benicio Del Toro was probably a bit of a odd casting for the lead role but he handled it pretty well in my mind. Anthony Hopkins did a good job as well playing the father in the movie. I think my only real complaint with the movie is a minor one... after Benicio turns into the Wolf Man, his hair on top of his head doesn't seem to change much.. so the Wolf Man has a bit of curly hair on top of his head... just thought it looked a little weird to me.

Anyway, if your in mood for a bit of a monster movie, The Wolf Man might be for you. I'll give this movie 4 Torches
Law Abiding Citizen

This movie stars Gerard Butler as a guy who watches helplessly as his wife and daughter are raped and murdered only to have the justice system cut a deal with one of the assailants. Needless to say, he is unhappy when told by the big time prosecuter that this was really the only thing that they could do and at least one of the perp's was going to be executed for the crime. This doesn't sit well with Gerard's character but for the time being he leaves it alone. About 10 years later he's back though, and this time he's prepared.

I thought the movie had a decent story and had a few twist and turns in it that I wasn't expecting which is always nice when seeing these types of movies. Butler did a good job of playing the vengeful husband/father. For the most part the movies isn't to gruesome but there is one scene that is quite bloody. The movie is now out on DVD and well worth renting if your into action/thriller type movies.

I give this movie 4 1/2 Torches
Dave, and other Siskel and Eberts,
For those who put stock in your review, remember to tell them the availability of the movie you review, just as Dave did above in Law Abiding Citizen ( I like the name of that movie!)
This could be just as simple as saying it is 'now playing', 'coming soon to video', 'at stores and DVD rental places', 'now showing on HBO', etc.
Maybe put a date on the movie too, so folks can distinguish between versions having the same name.
I will try to remember that... although at times I have a memory of a gnat :-P
Who said Wolfman? I remember an OLD movie I liked very well indeed, it was Scarier that these today by far. Starred Michael Landon as "I was a teenage wolfman". Now this dates some years, but, if you get the chance to view it, do not crawl under the covers, at least not until the end. 5 Torches for archivals I vote.
I don't think I even seen "I was a teenage Wolfman", I did love the original Wolf Man with Lon Chaney though... one of my favorites. Just finally picked up the original a few weeks ago. Cool thing with buying the original is that they are promoting the new remake by offering $10 toward a ticket to the new version.
Shutter Island

This is a psycological thriller starring Leonardo DeCaprio and just opened in theaters a few days ago. The movie starts out with Leo as a Federal Marshall that along with his new partner is being sent to a mental hospital that sits out on an island off of Boston.

Generally I like a decent psychological thriller (i e Silence of the Lambs) but this one just didn't do it for me. Main thing was the movie was to long... toward the end I was looking forward to it getting over. Without giving to much away, there was plenty of crazy dreams and stuff in the movie.

For whatever reason, I just had a tough time getting into this movie and was a bit let down by the end. I am going to give this movie 2 Torches
I fooled you guys, the teenage wolfman it was not, it was, "I was a teenage werewolf", but, of course, with the same star, Michael Landon, Little Joe from the Ponderosa. And of course Little House on the Praire. You guys don't remember that, nowsaduya?
I never seen "I was a teenage werewolf".. heard of it though. Michael Landon was a decent guy, its a shame he died early.

Speaking of Little House on the Prairie, I have a little bit of a claim to fame regarding the author of the Prairie books, Laura Ingalls Wilder... it seems that she is a distant relative of mine. Not exactly what she would be considered as in if she would of been a distant cousin or what have ya.
Claim to fame, sorry, I have none known to me. But, I did see the Ivan Tors studios in Miami, long long ago, along with the mini-subs used in 007 movies, some flipper series boats/stages, some Frank Sinatra stage setups for his detective/police movies. All filmed in the 60's.
Cop Out

Cop Out is a new movie in theaters now staring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan. Its basically a buddy cop comedy/action movie.. sort of like the Rush Hour movies without the martial arts. Willis and Morgan play cops that due to a bit of a misadventure at the beginning of the movie, get suspended but still end up in the middle of a drug ring investigation.

All in all it wasn't a bad movie... not the best cop movie ever but certainly not the worst by any means... movies like the first couple Beverly Hills Cop and Rush Hour movies were better but this one will at least be worth a rental if you opt not catching it in a theater. The action is decent and the comedy isn't to bad either for the most part although not all the jokes work. The movie is "R" rated so if your offended by the "F" word or if that word being overused bothers you, this might not be the movie for you.

I'm going to give this movie 3 1/2 Torches
