ROAD TRIP
With any luck I will be going on a 16 day road trip cross country this summer. Starting out in Michigan heading to California and then back tracking to Arizona - Fort Huachuca. Along the way we are planning on stopping at Mt.Rushmore, Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Canyon to name a few off the top of my head. I was wondering if anyone had any other ideas of places to stop along the way. I am hoping to make this a fun educational trip for my g.nephews (ages 2 &5).

All I can say is good luck traveling across country with a 2 and 5 year old. Your biggest problem is keeping them busy. A couple of days vacation in a car is a long time for little ones but 2 weeks in the hot sun. Wow! Sorry to be negative but I've been there, done that.

We are a little leery ourselves - but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm hoping the 5 yr old will be fascinated by the sights and the 2 yr as long as he has food he's pretty content.

First thing I would suggest is investing in a portable DVD player and a selection of movies for the young ones, will definitely help keep the youngsters busy.
As far as other destinations go, you might consider Devil's Tower. I believe its in eastern Wyoming which in the grand scheme of things shouldn't be all that far from Mt Rushmore. If your not sure what Devil's Tower is, its a natural landmark that if you ever saw the movie Close Encounters Of The Third Kind was the towering rock formation that everyone ends up heading too.
In Utah, maybe visiting the famous Salt Lake and the Salt Lake City area.
If you get into Nevada, you could drive by Area 51 and see if E T is home.
If you make it into New Mexico you could hit Roswell, of course famous for an alleged UFO accident.

I think they have every electronic gadget ever made - but I'll double check on the dvd player. I googled Devils tower, looks pretty cool. I think the Salt Lake should be a definite - The only time I was in Salt Lake City was to put in a job for the Olympics and it was a little to cold to even think about the Salt Lake. Area 51 and Roswell sounds like winners to. Thanks for all the great ideas.

My brother and I went on the route back a dozen years ago that touched on Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone. Check out the Corn Palace, and the Badlands in South Dakota. With a stop at Wall Drugs, of course. Check out some of those National Parks in Utah on your way down to the GC. Wish you luck on gas prices.

The badlands look awesome - I hope to get in at least 2 days camping. Of course I will go to Wall drugs, I seem to have misplaced my bumper sticker from the last visit. As far as gas I'm hoping it's going to go down (wishful thinking) my niece and her husband are planning on buying a 30' toy trailer for the journey, being pulled by a suburban I think we will be lucky to get 10 mpg.

The only way I would suggest to travel with kids on a long trip is in a motor home large enough for them to move around and get some exercise while traveling. The problem of course is the gas mileage. But how often does one make this type of trip.

With gas prices I think you can take this trip only once. I might have to try and find a black market for one of my kidney's. I think roughly the trip will be 3500 mile, so hopefully we can keep driving down to 4 to 5 hrs a day.

I would go with the Motorhome as well, that is how I traveled as a kid and am working on that for future trips. between a suburban pulling a trailer and a motorhome your mileage isn't going to make a difference. we spent about $55/300 miles (one tank per 300mi) with gas farther down south at 3.35ga(my Mariner has 14 gal tank and gets about 20mi per gal)l
