I would say the majority of voters and citizens in general still believe McCain is the hero he's been falsely bragged up to be. Wikipedia says nothing negative in their biography. BUT, people that were in the Navy and still alive at that time, as well as Merchant Marines in that time, all say the opposite, and expose the truths. He is dying a very bitter and ruthless old man nowadays, and has no right to say much of what he spews out. He has not acted in any professional conservative ways in years, instead, a RINO. I remember seeing John McCain in the limelight, throwing four other senators under the bus trying to save his hide during the Keating Five episode in the late 1980s.  The other four, including Don Riegel of Michigan, were Democrats.  He never struck me then as an honorable person, he has never struck me since as anything other than a selfish opportunist.  Due to his innate character flaws, it doesn't surprise me that he broadcast this traitorous propaganda; he has already been caught as signing records as a POW that were of the same vein.  McCain can take pride in that he is a proven survivor, but he survives at the cost of any kind of integrity, he survives by selling out.  A good review of McCain's character from 1989 came from this Arizona editorial entitled "McCain:  The Most reprehensible of the Keating Five" which finished with:

First of all I don't think McCain was a coward or traitor and I can't imagine what mistreatment he and other POW's went thru. My beef with McCain is how he is mouthing off about what the present Administration is doing and his bitterness towards Trump which in my opinion is harming and dividing the Country. Why he went against American's interest on key legislation makes more sense now. The fact that he used his "hero" status for a life of political gains which come to find out is built on lies is a major problem. Also the fact that he could have been compromised and possibly black mailed all during his political career may have some validity.
