On Sunday, September 27, we were thankful on our Facebook page, The Ludington Pitchfork, that city leaders and the DPW hadn't yet saw fit to put up the snow fencing at the beach, as it has often done within a week of Labor Day in past years, ever since a freak windstorm hit it hard on Labor Day weekend in 2010.

We have often lamented the early arrival of snow fences on the beach since, imploring the city to adopt a proactive and more adaptable plan by devising fast-deployment fencing systems, which could even save a lot of sand clean-up even should a windstorm hit during the tourist season and allow locals and early and late-season tourists to enjoy a couple more months of beach weather each year, rather than have the fences up 70% of the year.

But the fencing was still missing that day, and one could say they took notice of my posting and started the process of getting fence installation underway the next day-- as if it was an oversight on their part, not because there was any windstorm in the forecast.  Seeing DPW workers installing these snowfences a couple days later had tickled my muse and for some reason I associated it with a song I hadn't really thought about for years.

And thanks to a young woman very special to me going through a phase where she loved everything associated with the Disney film "Frozen" and another young woman singing the song memorably during a school talent show I attended for early inspiration, I couldn't help but be adaptive myself and do my own reconstruction of the Frozen song "Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?" and relate it to our own late-summer tradition in Ludington.  If you activate the Youtube video of the song and follow along with the alternate lyrics below, you too can appreciate this annual post-Labor Day ritual in verse.

Do you wanna build a snowfence?
C'mon, tourists are away
We never see them anymore
Must do this chore
To our local's dismay.

They think the park's for them too,

We know it's not
Fudgies it's only for you,
Do you wanna build a snowfence?
It kinda has to be a snowfence
Public Works wants to
Oh, but why?

Do you wanna build a snowfence?

Or shut off access to the pier?
Locals enjoying city parks
In late September is the one thing that we fear (Hang in there, Jones)
It seems a little loony,
All these nice fall days,
Not able to use the beach (tick tock, tick tock)

Please, we know you live here
There's other places to go,
We say, "tough luck, bud",
the beach is closed
We'll open it in May,
Just so you know
We support each other
You pay our salaries
To keep sand at the beach
Do you wanna build a snowfence?...
