Thanks for posting this When. I have seen some beautiful photos of that building. It is sad that such a structure has been abandoned but there are many large buildings in Detroit that stand empty.

Michigan has many "ghost towns" and they are often visited by "treasure hunters" with metal detectors. There are also several good books on Michigan ghost towns.

Sounds like we've found one of Willy's hobbies.  I remember back when I was a kid, my older brother brought a relatively cheap metal detector with visions of riches; and if bottle caps and tinfoil had any value, he would have got back on his return.  I recently was bequeathed a metal detector with some discrimination capability, and so may take that up again when I can afford some time and a 9-volt battery or two.

I also had an interest in Michigan ghost town's and checked out about a half dozen of them in the U.P., and some local ones, like Marlborough.  Anyone ever heard of that place?

No where's Marlborough?

Marlborough consists essentially of the ruins of one of the largest cement plants in the world, built in 1902; it covers more than 40 acres, and was an immense operation. It was considered a "model town", in view of the services and amenities made available to its workers. From 1903 to 1906, it was exactly that; in 1907, the company slid into bankruptcy, due to serious miscalculations concerning its sources of raw materials as well as its markets By the end of WWI, it was a ghost town, with most of its assets stripped and sold.Marlborough is located about 2 miles south of Baldwin Michigan (on M-37), and about 0.3 mi east of M37. Visitors should be extremely careful of the many tunnels, pits, and other depressions left over from the dynamiting of the property.

Watch this video, it's an interesting place to explore when here:  http://www.metacafe.com/watch/310187/ghost_town_cement_company/

My friends and I have gone out there when we were ALOT younger lol. We'd always wait until night and go out there to see if we could see any ghosts or hear anything. Long story short, I thought a friend of mine was standing next to me and when I looked over I realized it wasn't my friend, but a young lady, mid 20s early 30s, in a white dress. I literally freaked out and ran back to the car. I didn't say a word to anyone, I was honestly too shaken up. They did however see me running and took their cue and ran back to the vehicles as well. When I told them what happened, and what I saw, they kind of got creeped out and we left and haven't been back since.

That would be a creepy place at night with the tall walls of the ruins casting dark moonshadows.  You'll have to embellish that story a little in the future though; seeing a young lady out in the middle of nowhere sounds a little thrilling in another way for me, LOL.

It is a beautiful building - to bad they couldn't use the stimulus money to rehab
