Correctional Officers In Need of Correction: April 2010

Being a correctional officer is a tough, often thankless job.  Good correctional officers rarely get the recognition of achievement that others who excel in their job, just the grief of having to deal with a bunch of dangerous felons who could seriously injure or kill them if given the opportunity.  For those who go through their career in a professional, accountable manner, we salute you.

 

Lately, we have been discussing the grievance of an inmate at the Oaks Correctional Facility up north.  I personally know a former CO from that facility who I believe is beyond reproach, he has even hinted at a 'bad situation' leading to his decision to leave there.  I have sent an even-handed letter to that facility about the prisoner's grievance and have received no response over the last month. 

 

Lately, we have had a new member join who is solidly behind the CO charged with ethical lapses by the inmate, who he has yet to attribute any rights to.  This member has claimed to be a CO himself, and he feels the inmate is lying, and the CO involved is an upstanding CO.  He may very well be right.  The certainty of this member in the innocence of the CO, had me asking why.

Justin Ryan Tankersley, 23, a correctional officer at the Walton Correctional Institution, was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance after an officer found one Xanax pill and seven Valium pills in a Dodge truck, according to a report from the DeFuniak Springs Police Department.

An off-duty Westminster police detective was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping a woman at Ontario Mills Mall and raping her at gunpoint, police said Monday.

A corrections officer from the Chino Institution for Men, who was also arrested in connection with the incident, has been booked on suspicion of carjacking and is being held as an accessory to the crime.

  In Rensselaer County a corrections officer is under arrest for allegedly threatening someone with a gun.

North Greenbush police arrested 53-year-old Anthony Holston, he's charged with assault and menacing. Police say he assaulted his victim, then allegedly pointed a loaded gun at them.

Schenectady Corrections Officer Arrested

SCHENECTADY—Yet another employee of the Schenectady County Sheriff’s Office is on the other side of the law.

Corrections officer Ross Lackey,27, has been arrested by Niskayuna police after a woman filed a complaint against him for allegedly striking her, putting her in a strangle hold and taking her cell phone to prevent her from calling for help.

Lackey has been charged with two counts of second degree harassment, a violation; and second degree unlawful imprisonment.

Also I think the reason that the superiors at oaks probably haven't said anything regarding this issue is because they don't consider it an issue.

This sort of thing most likely happens between co's and inmates more than anyone would like to admit. And if the admins spend all day putting out fires over verbal mudslinging they would never get there jobs done.

I would bet that if there were any real threats being made then something would be done about it.

But I bet it went something like this.

I have never personally met Aquaman, that I know of, but historically I have respected his opinions. I have not always agreed with them, though we agree on many points, and I generally consider him an on-line ally.

I believe Aquaman has stated often that he believes there may be something behind the MuMaugh letter, and yet has not presumed the guilt of CO Fink. From what he has said in the past, he definitely believes in the concept of being "innocent until proven guilty", just like the vast majority of us. His latest post may sound to some as if he is asking CO Fink to prove his innocence, but it is more of a throw-his-hands-in-the-air call for some resolution as to either debunking or proving what MuMaugh has alleged.

Stan presumed Mumaugh was 100% guilty of perjury in drafting the letter he wrote, before any real evidence to the contrary was established, just because he was serving time in a high security prison. Aquaman considered that a very real possibility himself all through the discussions on this.

X, I think ya may have missed what I was trying to say. I wasn't really directing attention to any one persons opinion but taking all differing views as a whole and trying to come up with a 'most likely' case scenario of my own.

That is....nobody(here) really knows or can prove anything, because we are all speculating. It could go either way, or no way at all. That would be the throw ones hands in the air solution...nobody really knows, or probably will know. Unless you get some info off your foia I doubt there is anything any of us can conclude except that we really don't know anything.

So, without regard to anyones opinion but my own....I think it was a 'yo mama' sort of thing. But again, I really don't know anything about it; and when it comes right down to it it isn't all that important to me, except my yo mama comparison was pretty creative I think.

Your 'yo mama' reply came during while I was composing my own thoughts earlier. RJE, Sheila, and even Disarm do all speak with an uncommon amount of common sense on most occasions-- and are very creative. They have changed or at least tempered my views in the past with their cogent commentary.

Speculation is pretty much all of what we have to work with here until we hear otherwise, and I will agree with the majority of opinion here, in that the discussion devolved into an ugly, irrelevant scuffle.

What does a Loser, yes the criminal is Always a LIAR and tramp to society, have to gain, still serving a long sentence for several more years, to gain by making up such a hideous and ridiculous story about his daughters' safety and security? Couldn't he come up with another fairy tale that would be more sensational and attention getting than this? Will this story, "believe it or not", make the Guiness Book of World Records, is that what the prisoner saught? How about a book or movie offer afterwards, is that what the prisoner seeks? How about the distant small newspaper out West, are they looking for National attention to increase their sales of newspapers? The easiest and most convenient thoughts to have on this case is to accept the "quid pro quo" , i.e., it's a no-brainer, this convict is a liar, he just has to be, they ALL ARE! Or they wouldn't be in jail to begin with, right? The other day last week, a prisoner serving a life sentence for murder was released after serving nearly 30 years. He was released now after this long period because DNA evidence proved him unequivocally innocent. The Justice system we have in place here in the USA is by far a better one than most countries in the world. However, it is not perfect in any shape, way, or form. The sooner people wake up and see that this type of error could just as well happen to them as the next door neighbor, the better. What we perceive as truth and righteous, is not always as they appear. It's called window dressing, or for lack of a better concept, pure propoganda at times. Tell them what they expect and want to hear, they'll bite the hook and swallow everytime. Did anyone here at all take just one monosecond to put yourself in the prisoners seat? I know Stan and Disarm didn't, and never will. The "quid pro quo" must be observed and steadfastly imbedded into our hearts and souls at all times, irregardless the particular circumstances, wherefore if not, then what do we have to point fingers at, surely not ourselves nor any system of justice we back up with our precious tax dollars. Until ALL the FACTS are known in this case, I presume no stance of absolute guilt to either party, but, I will have empathy for the prisoner here, not because he's without sin, but perhaps a pawn of a system that is, and remains a parasite on this human race, and maybe even our own precious USA.
