Correctional Officers In Need of Correction: April 2010

Being a correctional officer is a tough, often thankless job.  Good correctional officers rarely get the recognition of achievement that others who excel in their job, just the grief of having to deal with a bunch of dangerous felons who could seriously injure or kill them if given the opportunity.  For those who go through their career in a professional, accountable manner, we salute you.

Lately, we have been discussing the grievance of an inmate at the Oaks Correctional Facility up north.  I personally know a former CO from that facility who I believe is beyond reproach, he has even hinted at a 'bad situation' leading to his decision to leave there.  I have sent an even-handed letter to that facility about the prisoner's grievance and have received no response over the last month.

Lately, we have had a new member join who is solidly behind the CO charged with ethical lapses by the inmate, who he has yet to attribute any rights to.  This member has claimed to be a CO himself, and he feels the inmate is lying, and the CO involved is an upstanding CO.  He may very well be right.  The certainty of this member in the innocence of the CO, had me asking why.

I Googled "Correctional Officer arrested" in Google News and came up with many results.  Here are just a few that came up occuring in April of 2010.

I doubt stanstayhi will be able to come up with that proof. I notice my post on general career issues of those in power get further by showing subordinates some respect instead of using their power as an "in the subordinates face" and lording it over them was ignored.

I repeat. Those who control through coercion might get "OBEDIENCE" until the slave has an opportunity to rebel (or get even)...and they do 90% of the time. Yet if shown some respect and expectation they will follow general guidelines it seems the slaves are more willing (sometimes become eager) to "obey the rules".

Even inmates have a code of honor for those who show them a little respect to those who treat them as human being. I agree some don't, but I find it interesting that those who abuse their power and force obedience of their slave are usually the ones who are attacked if opportunity arises.
Believe me, showning some/any respect to inmates - even though they are criminals - gets you alot more than when you are an a**hole. Meaning they are more likely to listen to what you tell them to do (ie lock down, take a shower, clean your cell) when u are respectful towards them - they will be respectful towards u in turn and are more likely to "help" per se than cause trouble. For myself, being respectful & respected toward & by the inmates while I was preggo & working at the MCSO - made some nites alot easier than what they could have been............ IMHO & from experience thats all
Thanks for verifying what I've been trying to say both here and in the thread I had to close down.

In any situation if we show respect especially if we are in authority position, we get much further with others. The old adage "Honey gets you further than vinegar" sums it up.
You closed the other thread because you wanted to accuse me of something that was total bull and you know it. You have proved nothing and tried to post facts with nothing to back them up. I called you on them and you became upset that I did not believe them. I posted the inmate's arrest from the newspaper and your response was well the girl lied..... I have one thing to say to you SHAME ON YOU , the girl lied but the this inmate is truthful. Who the heck is in jail? The girl is not right?

Once again I have no ideal who you are nor do I care you closed the thread so you could have the last reply because you cannot handle the challenge to prove your point... what better way to show your point..... please close the thread this guy is picking on me!
Thanks for the personal attack stanstayhi.

You twisted things around and made a fool of yourself.
What proof?
Masonco

I don't know what you are saying about personnel attacks. I am asking for the facts to back up what you are stating here. Thats all, do I doubt what you are saying yes I am. Here is what you accused me of when you shut down your thread.. If this was not a attack then I do not know what it is..

"Guess what. I figured out who you are. You have not changed. Your posts are like someone who was banned elsewhere for trying to degrade me. BUT GUESS WHAT....YOU only MAKE YOURSELF LOOK FOOLish WITH THIS TYPE OF POSTS!

How desperate you must be to have to find fault with others to make yourself feel good. I know of some great therapists in the area you might wish to see."

Now what am I twisting around?

"Most of his problem appears to be addictions. I no longer take stock in the CSC charges especially the 4th degree ones because there are many serving time simply because they know jury will believe the girl even if she lies to keep mom's new b/f out of trouble. That happens a lot more than most realize."

I do not call you a fool I do not call you a idiot why? I do not need to resort to that type of behavior once yo start calling people names then you have lost any point you were trying to make. You are still trying to fight someone that it appears gave you a hard time on the other forum. Got news for you he is not here don't know where he is but let sleeping dogs lie
Shelia - SO TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I worked as a C/O's at 3 different facilites and it was the same at each place - you always have a handful of C/O's who go into the profession for just the POWER and the easy $$$ - look at that officer at the punk prison who helped that inmate escape. Inmates have 24hr a day 7 days a week to watch C/O's and come up with ways to entrap them .................. its not to hard to do to some C/O's out there
I do not agree with much that you have said but I have to agree with one thing, inmates have all the time in the world to turn out a C/O and entrap them it happens every where. Sometimes people get the job for a reason so I will leave it that.

Angela don't tell me that you got this job to help people out right?
I suppose we could call Escape from NY and LA type movies fictional prison movies. Many, many of the others, including Alcatraz, Sing Sing, & Brubaker were based on books written by people in the prison system, then produced for movies. I suppose the movie about Al Capone in prison was a farce and fictional too? C'mon Stan, John Q. Public isn't all that dumbed down, but the gov't. is working hard at it everyday. Did anyone know that we, the USA, have the largest prison system/population in the entire world? And the most CO's? Next I'll hear that chain gangs & mud reclamation gangs never existed either, just a figment of my imagination I personally witnessed in states like Alabama and Georgia on vacations as a kid. Problem is, there shouldn't be that much blame to go around in the system with CO's if they are truly doing their job correctly, sadly, the inmate part is still going to be there anyhow to a greater degree. After all, they aren't called cons and prisoners just for fun, they have lost all their liberties and freedoms, and that has to be a heavy burden to carry for the time being served. Men in authority can find commonground and make the situation better and safer for all, if they truly want to. Some years back before all the new technology in prisons, we often saw riots and killings, and those too were real, on tv even, and it wasn't because of great conditions and treatment by authority.
Aquaman

You have no ideal what you are talking about... Have you ever been inside a prison to see how it works? Have you... don't think so if you think these movies are real. Hollywood liberals make that crap and you know it. I think you must believe everything you read on the internet too right?

So what is wrong with chain gangs? What should they do with the prisoners? Have them sit on their bunks all day and do nothing?I go news for you they will figure something to do and it will involve killing or beating the crap out of their fellow prisoners or who ever else gets in there way.
Stanstayhi - um ya what do u mean? I went into the correctional profession for the $$. You may not agree with me, thats fine, but until you have worked the places that I have worked and seen what I have seen at the facilities that I have worked at then maybe you would agree - I have first hand knowledge and experience - WHAT DO U HAVE?
