Mason County 911 operators received multiple calls today about a fire blowing heavy smoke over US-10 today, in spite of Holiday season and recent rains. Seems the Lud. DPW is now burning tons of brush and leaves picked up in the city after weeks of fall being gone. The fire, as Dept. head Joe Stickney stated, has a legal DNR burn permit, and covers about 1/4 acre by the Waste Water Treatment Plant. (Both Stickney and the other DPW person that called for the permit are now on vacation too). Hmmm, aren't the DNR/St. of Mich people mostly all on seasonal holiday now? How do you get that permit now? And why has it piled up for a couple of months beforehand? No, you can't burn leaves or trash in the city limits, but it's darn close where it is now. And also, is it being controlled? The complaints are it's thick over on US-10, may create an accident due to bad visibility, and that being at least about 3/4 mile away too. So, the highest priority for the DPW this time of the season is burning foul trash and leaves? Hmmm......I would have thought it more important to get city street lights all working now that days are very short, get ready for the ball drop NYE, or catch up on sewer and water main work that is undeniably way overdue. I guess I guessed wrong eh? I wonder how many city trucks and men are out there, looking around, drinking coffee, watching a few work, while the rest stand around? (Link I saved will not post again, happens with almost every newspaper article for me). I
