As an avid bicyclist, I should perhaps appreciate these bike lanes; but I think they are a waste of resources. I proudly proclaim myself a vehicular cyclist, who feels that such things are detrimental to safety. While I can appreciate a wide road shoulder here and there on heavy-trafficked roads, statistics and personal experience indicate there is more danger inherent when these are used. Meanwhile, the casual biker feels he is a lot safer. Here's a video that shows my point, from the big city (where you think these lanes would be great):
Bike lanes and wide shoulders are great in certain areas. Locally, Old 31 between Ludington and the county line, and out to the beach on M-116 are examples where it works out better for vehicles and cyclists to share the pavement in a segregated way.
Traffic Engineers really need to develop a better overall plan when they try to install bicycle facilities. The one bicycle lane we have in Ludington on a small section of Bryant Road (between Rath and M-116) really doesn't do anything other than allow the City to say they have a bike lane. Most usually avoid this area by taking the multi-use path thru Cartier anyway
