GOODBYE BADGER! MAYBE

This may be the last run for the Badger so I thought it would be nice to have a topic about it so folks can post what they feel about it's possible demise and some memories they may have or history of the S.S. Badger.

Well,I believe it was "City of Saginaw", but I probably am wrong..long time ago, you know. I remember seeing the old PM 18 tied up at the dock for many years, but I have heard it became a barge somewhere in South America..I have no idea what became of the rest of the fleet. I was really not interested in carferry history at the time. Too young to appreciate what a marvel they were. Many relatives worked on them. First (and only) time I ever got seasick was on the 31.. memorable occasion!.

The Ludington Car Ferries are deeply rooted in the history of Ludington. I have talked with people all over the world who ask me about the Car Ferries when they find out I am from Ludington. My neighbor here in Sedona, Arizona came from England and he told me that he took the Car Ferry across Lake Michigan in the 1950s. When the Badger leaves Ludington never to return, it will take a part of Ludington with it.

There is no good reason for the Badger to discontinue it's use of coal. I've heard that the amount of mercury put into the Lake by the Badger"s burning of coal in the last 50 years would be about 1 oz. This action against the Badger is all political and is being fueled by the Lake Express Ferry Company. This is one of the reasons environmentalist are being looked upon more and more as wackos. The problem is they have powerful allies in the Government whose common sense is influenced by campaign dollars.
