In the most recent several years the South James Street area has had a lot of reconstruction in the streets, sewers, curbs, and paving. It's been a good thing for the downtown main street and it's merchants, up until we consider the fact that sometimes, the heavy machinery and heavy concrete and asphalt were undermining the area with oooops, Big Sink Holes, Cave-In's, dangerous to all concerned. While pedestrians and skilled DPW officials looked on and tried to keep working through these problems of an unusual nature, they, up above ground, did not realize what they really uncovered in several areas. So, HERE'S THE REAL SCOOP ON SINK HOLES THERE! They aren't sink holes at all, they are an intricate system of underground TUNNELS that have been there near 100 years or so. I know, I've been in several years back, not just swimming around like an Aquaman, but a curious young man given the privilege by certain unnamed store owners to see the TRUTH! The reasons for their actual existence is unknown, as this happened in a time long before I or you existed, or were passed on the SECRETS! Here's a brief synopsis of my findings: 1) the first I witnessed in the early 70's was in the old Club Lakeside Bar, now the Blue Moon Cafe?, way down under in the basement, the tunnel crossed the street and went to the Ludington State Bank's secret basement, long since now been bricked up to prevent access, to the Money Vault,  2) Capt. John's, now the AJ partyport, under the new expanded north side, another tunnel, also crossed the street over to either the old Bach's Bakery building or adjoined the old Bicycle shop owned by Lee Peters, thereabouts, and 3) where the old McDonald's Drug store was, crossing also to a now vacant gas station I believe. Nowthen, whom commissioned these Secret Tunnels, when, why, and mostly, why is it an unknown to so many yet today? I'd file for an FOIA but I truly doubt the crew down there knows either, nor has any spare time now since X keeps them hopping, har!  Anyone in this forum know or have relatives that can give us a clue as to the SECRETS? I know some big city's, like Minneapolis, in the 1920's had such a system, it was during prohibition days, speak easy's were down there, and as well known gangster hideouts discovered later. Sorry, there are no links nor pictures available, I am bringing this TOP SECRET to your attention ONLY!

I do know it is fact that Al Capone was a regular at the hotel by round lake. It was even discussed in the paper a while back.
and too many elderly have verified it as personally talking to him.
Anyway, I will stop following this topic since you are not interested in legends and things that could contribute to those underground tunnels that were closed.
Capone was 1920's era. Just trying to get to the bottom of the Time Tunnel question is all. I'm sorry Masonco, didn't mean any harm to feelings. Can you link or quote heresay of any of the Al Capone connections? What paper? LDN? Please? I just never read nor watched any film that had him coming up to this area. There was a Jazz artist, Louis Armstrong or some such, in that Round Lake, Walhalla area in the 40's, but that's all I heard of. Enlighten me, I would appreciate it. Thanks. P.S. please accept my apology for any misunderstanding.
Since this is my thread, I want to take this opportunity to wish Guido, my friend in monkeyshines and great debate, always astute and interesting, a Very Happy Birthday today, just noticed this announcement, and hope you are well and happy today. Best to ya. AQ
Any more information on Ludington's Time Tunnels folks? This thread is also a truism for locals, not a prank at all either. Thanks.
Sounds like something that would require some more loose tongues in the know or some Ludington Library research. An FOIA to view the files of the building permits for these buildings may get some more info without actual snooping or trespassing, but I've recently been in a slump at this.
The stories we heard about those hidden travels you said were impossible. I'm waiting for you to finish researching so you can share the information.
X, I really doubt that any building permits are going to show secret tunnels under their property, lol, now rofl. That's why they are "SECRETS" pal! These aren't FOIAable, lol. You'll probably have to go the same route as the rest of us that have witnessed them, go to the building and ask the owner if they know about them, tell them you do, then go in them. Look for secret passages way down in the lowest level basement, for trap doors in the floor, or other hidden doors in the walls. Some may have been bricked up by now. Try Les at AJ's and whomever owns/operates the Blu Moon Cafe when they are not busy with business, day's end, day's beginning, etc. suggestion.
Or go to the nursing homes and talk to the elderly (over 80's) who remember what their parents or grandparents were involved in when they were tots. That is where I got my input from over the years.

They are not all senile and making up stories.

Back in the 90's and when I worked in Baldwin, I had a patient who talked about how as a young child she was taken to "serve" in Idlewild. So I knew the history of Idlewild before it became big news. Here in Ludington, Oceana there are a few very alert 90+ year old people who would love to share history as they experienced it or observed their parents do it.

Recently some talked about their parents who were involved in a major bootlegging ring in this area for the "mob" in Chicago, and that is why Al Capone would stay at the hotel by Round Lake next to the railroad tracks.

Now to find that stop following this thread button that I thought I found before.
Perhaps, Aq, but you are mentioning two different public buildings and the files they have inside the building inspectors records (perhaps down in one of these secret areas) on each building just may have that information if it was part of the original construction, or not done openly, but had the construction inserted into the records.

It is likely they would be reticent in giving this out if they want to keep it secret, but I did look at the files regarding one building in Ludington through an FOIA and found a lot of interesting historical facts on it. Here let me pick you off the floor so you can reply, ROFL.
