The Jack O'Lantern has a history that dates back many centuries. Irish myth has it that a man named Stingy Jack made a deal with the Devil to have a drink with him, via the Devil changing himself into a coin so they had money for the drinks. Jack tricked the Devil and put the coin into his pocket, keeping the money next to a silver cross. Eventually Jack let the Devil go and change back to his original form, provided the Devil would not claim his soul nor bother him for one year. After the year lapsed, Jack talked the Devil into picking some fruit in a tree for his soul in trade, again, Jack tricked the Devil by carving a cross into the tree so the Devil could not return to the ground. Jack agreed to let the Devil go again if he promised not to claim his soul nor bother him again for ten years this time. Some time later before the ten years, Jack died, and so, the powers in Heaven, recognizing Jack's errant behavior, refused him entry. When Jack arrived in Hell, the Devil also declined to let him in. The Devil did give Jack an ember with which to see his way back to earth. To this day, Jack roams the earth with the Jack O'Lantern in hand, not able to have his soul claimed by either party. Moral of the story, keep your Jack O'Lantern on the front porch today, cause you don't want Stingy Jack to trick or treat you into following his legacy. Funny how religion even trickled back to this ancient holiday, at least that's what history will tell you, if you're not a Stingy researcher, hardy har har har, and Happy Halloween Torchers, keep the lantern burning.
