Ludington Bathroom Videographers Still Filming Your Flushes
The Muskegon Chronicle reports that Trent Jannenga, an employee at a Muskegon gym, has been arrested and charged with two felonies (with up to nine years of jail time) for using his IPhone for surreptitious surveillance in the tanning room. Ironically, at approximately the same time the phone was found by a young woman, Trent himself called 911 to report his phone was stolen. Police forensics have discovered that the recording that happened on Wednesday was the only one that Trent had available (though he had admitted to prior filming he didn't save, and did not share).
Meanwhile, after about a dozen years of the Ludington Police Department (with full approval of the last two Ludington City Managers John Shay and Jim Miller) having cameras covertly placed in public bathroom ducts, some pointed inside stalls, and others pointed at urinals, recording people changing, going bathroom, and doing a variety of other acts with a reasonable expectation of privacy, there has been no repercussions for anybody, and still no indication of what they have done with the recordings through the years. Nor did the Michigan State Police use any forensics on their equipment when they 'investigated' the complaint. However, this occurs around the same time:
The LPD did finally put up signs on the outsides of the door telling people able to read that there was surveillance going on, but the cameras are still in the vents and on the walls pointed at stalls and urinals, so be sure to wave at the friendly police officers when you use Ludington public bathrooms-- keeping you safe.
MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI – One man is in police custody for allegedly attempting to videotape a female undressing in a tanning booth at Planet Fitness gym in Muskegon.
Muskegon County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Timothy Maat confirmed a warrant has been signed for Trent Allen Jannenga, who was an employee of the gym at the time of the alleged offense, for two separate charges: one count of attempting to capture an image of an unclothed person, a five-year felony; and one count of false report of larceny in a building, a four-year felony.
Maat said the alleged offense occurred on Feb. 12 in one of the tanning rooms at the gym.
Jannenga allegedly used an iPhone to try and make a video of a female undressing, Maat said. Police are investigating whether there are other victims, he said.
Police said the victim is a 21-year-old Norton Shores woman.
“The charge reflects that there was for sure one victim. The allegations are that he attempted to videotape her undressing while in one of the tanning booths,” Maat said.
The same day, Jannenga allegedly reported to police that his phone had been stolen just moments before the discovery of the alleged videotaping was made, Maat said.
“The evidence indicates he was lying,” he said.
Jannenga has a prior criminal history that includes shoplifting, minor in possession of alcohol and aggravated assault.
According to a press release from the Muskegon Police Department, Jannenga, 25, from Norton Shores, is suspected of taping others, then deleting what he allegedly recorded.
"The male admitted to recording several different customers while they tanned. He claimed that he watched the recordings and then immediately deleted them. Search warrants were executed on the cell phone and at the suspect’s residence," the press release stated.
"Using forensic protocols, detectives found no evidence to suggest that the recordings the suspect made were ever saved or otherwise shared."
Police said the woman managed to seize the cell phone that she found in the tanning room.
"The victim told officers that she disrobed in a private tanning booth, tanned, and at the conclusion of her tanning session found a cell phone concealed in the room recording her.
The victim seized the cell phone and turned it over to officers," the press release stated.
Authorities don't believe the video was shared via the Internet or in other ways.
"We are always relieved when we don't see any evidence of sharing. We had a very quick-thinking victim who stepped up and did a good job," said Muskegon Public Safety Director Jeffrey Lewis.
Lewis said if anyone suspects they have been videotaped at the gym to contact authorities at the Muskegon Police Department at (231) 724-6750.
Meanwhile, McCall Gosselin, Director of Public Relations and Planet Fitness Corporate Spokeswoman, issued this statement:
“At Planet Fitness, the safety and privacy of our members is extremely important to us. We are aware of the alleged incident and the former employee has been terminated. Our franchise owner is working closely with the local authorities to investigate," Gosselin said.
An employee of Planet Fitness in Muskegon said members had inquired Friday, Feb. 14 about the rumors of the case.
Planet Fitness on Henry Street became almost instantly popular in Muskegon with its low membership fee of around $10-$20.
In July 2012, a 22,000-square-foot Planet Fitness franchise owned by the same businessman opened off U.S. 31 in Holland. Most of the Michigan Planet Fitness franchises are located in southeastern Michigan, which include several Detroit suburbs.
Additional information about the criminal case was not immediately released.

Mr Gonzalez isn't to smart. All he has to do is get on the internet and he can see more naked bodies than he can handle. He'll even find women who record themselves with cell phones and post it. They do all the work and all he has to do is watch without the threat of going to jail.
I would have to believe that Gonzalez wanted footage of this relative of his over all those others he can find in the e-verse. One would also think that Trent Jannenga would be satisfied by being in a gym with all those tight-fitting yoga pants on the female clientele, and maybe get into a relationship with one, he is not a bad looking young man:
Nor was the Ada guy deformed. One has to wonder what was their incentive to do something which can ruin their life if discovered.
Copycat criminal alert. Another man from Muskegon nabbed for taking photos of unclothed women in tanning booths. The alleged incident happened Feb. 18 at Archers Speed Queen Laundromat, 2179 E. Apple Ave., according to the Muskegon County Prosecutor’s Office.
The psyches of some guys actually prefer being able to secretly record girls rather than to record a willing participant in almost a kind of a virtual raping of their privacy. When our Ludington officials get up at an open meeting and tell us that they have no problem with someone recording them on the crapper or using the urinal because they have been doing it to the public for thirteen years, it can be confusing.
The Young Peepers Club of West Michigan grows in number, another one succumbing to the tanning booth temptation once again. This screenshot of FOX 17's article on the arraignment of a young man for a potential two year felony for gawking, while our local Ludington Police Department continues to tech support hidden cameras in the vents at the Waterfront Park with the wholehearted support of an indifferent city council.
The amusing aspect of this article, however, is the advertisement to become an official pastor nestled between the headline and the story. Is this supposed to be part of the training?
