This afternoon, a meet and greet will take place in Ludington featuring local candidates for office from state senator on down the ballot, it will be hosted by the local Chamber Alliance. It is advertised as open to the general public, but as space is limited, registration is required:
And at this point the registration is closed; so, due to the limitations of space, those who failed to notice this event and timely register are shut out of meeting and greeting a collection of school board candidates, even-ward city councilor candidates, state representative candidates, etc. That's understandable, but what's not totally understandable is that the venue is a public facility that has adopted policies that keep the general public out and the current manager of the facility has implemented those policies to keep the general public out. For this event will be taking place at the Harbor View Marina (HVM) Harbormaster's Office:
The welcoming arms of HVM, where every entrance to the parking lot that serves the whole facility tells the general public that their vehicle will be towed just for being there without a permit that is only available to slip holders and their registered guests.
Be advised, all of your local candidates for office will be parking in the HVM lot unless they really like to walk and those who do park there will be flaunting the rules made and promulgated by both the marina manager and city hall against the public for the other 364 1/4 days of the year. These rules against the public being on HVM, owned by the state and managed by the city and supposedly open to the general public according to their intergovernmental agreement, will apparently be suspended for about two hours, but for some reason the notice for the meeting doesn't say so.
Back in 2020, I celebrated the occasion that HVM moved from a public/private partnership to a totally public facility by going swimming in their swimming pool, which by the approved contract was now open to the general public. Or so I and my copy of the federal and state constitution thought; Marina Manager Jim Christensen caught me on my heralded third visit and banned me not only from the pool without any reason other than for my misunderstanding of his anti-constitutional rules, but also from the Harbormaster's Quarters.
After I (ironically) called the LPD to settle the issue, Christensen stated plainly and repeatedly that "the pool and clubhouse are only available to registered and paid boat slip guests", this is preserved in the police report made that day. City Manager Mitch Foster and the Ludington council of that time affirmed this rule interpretation when I objected to it, they would even try to adjust the agreement with the state in order to effectively make the HVM a private facility and nullify the Fourteenth Amendment.
I've honored that banishment from HVM like I said I would do in that police report, but the city and their friends (like the Chamber Alliance of Mason County) continue to hold events supposedly open to the general public at HVM since those confrontations during 2020. These have been documented here, along with the disenfranchisement I have experienced, and other law-abiding citizens have experienced who obey Christensen's words even though it violates basic civil rights.
We have not been able to attend a May 2025 Invasive Species Workshop hosted by the city, a June 2024 strategic planning session held by the city council, and a January 2021 city council committee of the whole event, at the very least, and now we are not able to attend, meet, or greet any of our local candidates for office. Not because we were late in registering for the event, but because we observe the rules set by the marina manager that unless we are registered slip holders/guests, we cannot use any of the HVM facilities. In a way that violates the equal protection clause of our Constitution.

The chamber sponsorship made this into an event for elitist, for not only did they hold it in a place where the general public is normally not able to go to without being thrown out, the attendees were for the most part politicians and business moguls (sometimes the same people). I can say that I attended this event, but I did not go in, for fear of being arrested for criminal trespassing.
Mayor Mark Barnett and Chamber President Brandy Miller wanted me to come in, but I told both of them (one a mayor, one the event organizer) that they did not have the authority to protect me from being arrested by the LPD, as I was told I would be if I ever stepped foot in the Harbormaster's building without being a registered marina slip holder. Problem is I saw a lot of people there without being slip holders and I wonder why I am being treated different from everybody else in this great land of ours as a lifetime citizen.
Some guy crashed the meeting with a sign saying "City hall has taken away my right to attend this meet & greet", you can see it in the picture. What a loser, why can't he just be a keyboard warrior like myself.
It sounds like you have high ideals, Golf; more power to you. But if we ever become the safest, cleanest and most prosperous city in America, I hope your intent is also to keep it secret from the rest of the world, so we can maintain our paradise with just enough tourists to keep us happy.
