Sheriff's deputy arrested for child pornography in Grand Traverse County

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, MI – A sheriff's deputy is accused of possessing child pornography.

John Dwight Scheiding was arrested this weekend on three counts of possession of child sexually abusive material, a four-year felony, and using a computer to commit a crime, a seven-year felony, Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Bob Cooney said Monday, May 16.

Scheiding is also charged with willful neglect of public duty by a public officer, a one-year misdemeanor.

Cooney said he could not go into specifics but said "there were messages and information found on an electronic device."

Scheiding is expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Grand Traverse County District Court.

Child pornography? The "child" was 17 years old. Not really a "child." Allegedly this "child" sent bare butt photos to this cop and vice versa. The media beforehand portrayed this as perhaps a child under the age of 13. It will be interesting to observe the outcome of these allegations.

The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office released a statement on Monday afternoon, May 16th, 2016, concerning the arrest of a deputy over the weekend on child pornography charges.

According to the Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the John Scheiding residence on Wednesday, April 27th, 2016, at 11:00 p.m., in Long Lake Township, for a welfare check.

During this response, deputies were given information that indicated Scheiding may have been involved in criminal activity.

The next morning, April 28th, the sheriff’s office met with the prosecutor to discuss options for the pending investigation. It was ultimately determined that Michigan State Police would do the investigation. The sheriff’s office stated that Scheiding was immediately placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation.

John Scheiding will remain placed on paid administrative leave until the Sheriff’s Office can review the charges and the Collective Bargaining Agreement to determine if and when a change of his paid status is appropriate.

Scheiding was arrested by MSP on charges stemming from that investigation on Saturday, May 14th, 2016 at 8:00p.m.

John Scheiding was transported to the Grand Traverse County Jail where he was booked and then taken to the Leelanau County Jail.

Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Bob Cooney authorized five charges against Scheiding on Monday, May 16th, 2016. He is facing three counts of possession of child sexually abusive material, one count of using a computer to commit a crime as well as willful neglect of public duty by a public officer.

John Scheiding is expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Grand Traverse County District Court.

The first three counts carry a maximum penalty of up to four years in prison.  He could also be required to register as a sex offender.  The fourth count carries a maximum penalty of up to seven years in prison.

The willful neglect of public duty by a public officer is a misdemeanor offense which carries a maximum penalty of up to one year in jail.

Scheiding has been a deputy with the sheriff’s office since June of 2014.

It took 17 days to arrest him. Anyone else would have been body slammed and tossed in jail on day one! Good thing MSP stepped in because GTSO would have tried to cover this up.
