In what is probably a new low, The Obama reelection campaign has set up on Barrackobama.com a section where in lieu of giving someone a birthday gift or maybe a couple ask that instead of giving them wedding gifts, you can instead give a donation to the Obama campaign. Yes, its real. I guess I didn't realize how desperate that campaign had gotten that it would need to start begging for wedding and birthday gifts. I could see maybe a lower tier campaign do something like this but an incumbent presidential candidate? It just reeks of desperation. Romney's campaign did take in quite a bit more then Obama's last month and I'm sure this panhandling for gifts is in direct relation to that fact and that I believe Romney also out gained Obama in April as well. I've seen also where if you donate that you could win a dinner at a campaign event with either the Obama's or the Joe Biden.. kind of like a raffle/contest.

I guess the $30,000 celebrity fund raisers are starting to dry up or something... where oh where are you now George Clooney?

CHICAGO –  Getting married? President Barack Obama's re-election campaign has the perfect wedding gift in mind.

The campaign has started an "Obama event registry" to let engaged fans of the president ask friends and family for donations to his re-election bid instead of presents.

"Got a birthday, anniversary, or wedding coming up?" the site asks. "Let your friends know how important this election is to you -- register with Obama 2012, and ask for a donation in lieu of a gift.

"It's a great way to support the President on your big day," it continues. "Plus, it's a gift that we can all appreciate -- and goes a lot further than a gravy bowl."

When signing up, supporters are asked to set a monetary goal. The site also provides some suggested language to use when hitting up friends and relatives for campaign cash.

"For my big day, I'd like to show my support for a cause I believe in -- re-electing President Obama," it reads. "That's why I'm asking my friends and family to donate to the Obama campaign. Thanks for chipping in!"

Obama has been raising money at a furious clip to keep pace with his rival Mitt Romney and the Republican Party.

Romney and the Republican National Committee raised $76.8 million in May, beating the $60 million taken in by Obama and the Democratic National Committee.

I kinda agree with you dave but like the idea as well, how many of gifts are just crap that stays in the closet anyway. But it really pisses me off as that is money that could go to org's that help animals.

I would concur that as far as say wedding gifts go, there are probably a good number of those gifts that never get used... although I think with the help of wedding registry's that you'll find at Walmart, Target and other stores that couples will actually get more items they will use and not end up with 5 blenders and 3 toasters. Still, if I'm going to give a monetary gift to a group or organization, the last place I'd give that money to is a presidential campaign, no matter who's campaign it is.

Can you think of how much money you could make if you were an unscrupulous marketer and got that list. 

Maybe I should FOIA this list, and start offering 40 acre plots of land on the Sun.

Make that 200 acres and I might be interested but I have to have a view of a sunspot. Or how about selling them the 500 ft. wind turbines south of town for $1 dollar each with the stipulation they must be removed within 30 days.

I can sell 5 of those 40 acre plots to you, and for a slight fee make sure they are contiguous.  But my only such parcel available near sunspots has a solar wind farm in view.

I don't think people this smart could figure out how to remove these turbines, but you could probably convince them the unfinished ones are factory smokestacks sending out acid rain, and have them occupy the fields around them.

A new gift idea from the Obama campaign...

I don't know... just doesn't seem very respectful of the most powerful man in the world to have a shirt for sale talking about a 'big f*****g deal' but maybe that's just me. Just seems that a man that is suppose to be of fine education and such as Obama would be above having to use that terminology at all. Its one thing to talk like that with friends or whatever but to use it as advertising basically, just seems below the standards of the presidency in my mind.

On a side note, if your someone that doesn't support Obamacare, there is a shirt out there for you too....
