Greetings, Torchers. As a newbie here I would like to say that I have followed your postings for quite some time (actually, since the demise of the "Soup") and now feel compelled to submit my own contribution.

I would like to call upon my fellow liberals to come out of the shadows and be as hysterical about some of our core beliefs as a number of conservatives seem to be lately. Why should they get to have all the fun? I thought we were supposed to be the radicals. Doesn't anyone remember the sixties?

Anyway, I'd like to be the first to congratulate my socialist/communist/the-guy-wasn't-even-born-here/pals-around-with-terrorists/he's-destroying-the-country/President for tricking President George H.W. Bush into signing UN Agenda 21 TWO DECADES AGO and waiting until now to unleash its devastation.

Brilliant strategy and obviously something we libs need to jump up and down about.

Tiger, wouldn't that add an entirely new twist to this discussion if I was a gay male or female!   Oh, the fun we'd have, you and I!   I have been told that I am the  most talkative introvert on earth.   One just needs to get to know me a bit before my loquaciousness is unleashed.   My 19-year-old sent  me the text of a speech that she recently presented to one of her college classes.   It was about me.   She described me as a quietly independent woman who taught her the meaning of hard work and sacrifice, and who could tell the best raunchy stories and swear like a truck driver.    I've never been more flattered in my life.   :-)

It ended yesterday but you may want to sign up for the mailing list so you remember it for next year. www.nanowrimo.com or National November Writing Month, It is awesome.

Mr. Bailey, did you by any chance steal some of your hippie sister’s magic mushrooms in the 60’s and save them for your personal use today? I was hoping for a more succinct synopsis of what you believe I need to prepare for in the wake of President Obama’s evil machinations, not a link to your science fiction novel. I couldn't plow through your writing without feeling as though I had stumbled into “stream of consciousness” writing, which I always found tedious. (I have no affinity for James Joyce’s or Virginia Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing style either, so don’t feel bad.)

I applaud you for exercising your imagination and for taking on the challenge of writing a book. There are writers who are experts in diagramming sentences and constructing plot progressions, yet they lack the imagination to tell a good story. You obviously have an active imagination, but you need to refine the mechanics of your writing to make your story compelling to readers not normally drawn to science fiction. (Will someone please wake up Jubilo?)

It’s good that you realize the need for a substantive editor because they can be invaluable in helping a writer to craft a great book. I hope you are successful in finding a good one.

Now, if you please, may I have a simple outline or bulleted summary of what my President and his Liberal cabal are going to produce that will destroy my present utopia?

“I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit.”  (Ripley)

(Yawn) Oh, I thought you were going to describe something really scary. I think I’ll see Rapture before your scenario materializes. I’m also not worried because in the 50’s we were taught to “duck and cover” just before the Soviet nukes hit Chicago. We didn't have fire drills in school; we had air raid drills. When the White Sox won the World Series in 1959 during a night game, Mayor Daley ordered the Fire Chief to turn on the city’s air raid sirens. Freaked everybody out because they thought nuclear missiles were inbound. People were also angry because they thought it was a hell of a time for the Ruskies to attack and spoil the baseball victory.

Jubilo is awake.....barely.    The discovery that William and I are the same age has startled me back into consciousness.

It has!  Because of your views and  your writing, I had rather pictured you as a septuagenarian!    (No offense....well, maybe only a little...)   I don't feel like a fossil, truly, I'm quite sprightly for a 51-year-old.   I'm glad my brain hasn't turned into petrified wood.   Yet.    :-)

Hey, you're not so bad looking for a hyper conservative.   I do think, however, that we had the same mom.    For what it's worth, she called me a communist because I listen to NPR.

William

I'm guessing that your sisters behavior was a direct result of your mothers condition and her responses to that condition. I have a family member who is bipolar and there have been many a holiday when we thought the Devil had been invited. It is hard to describe to someone how a bipolar individual can affect an entire family in the most negative ways. This person has alienated every member of the family. I can fully understand what you are talking about but it's difficult to put oneself into a child's shoes and feel what they experience because for children it is much more of an intense emotional roller coaster ride.

I suppose then, that the passage of the 13th Amendment never occurred?

My personal favorite is the 15th amendment.

The Lincoln quote, I believe, was made in 1856, which was, I think, about eight years before the 13th.

Article 5 of the US Constitution allows Amendments to the Constitution to occur under its guidelines.  Thus when something like the 13th amendment passes legitimately through the processes, the Constitution is being adhered to as long as the rules are followed.

But after the process, the Constitution effectively changes.  The famed rail-splitter and vampire-hunter could have thus spearheaded these amendments and still lived by the quote William stated.
